Metroid prime 3 review-No spoilers
Dear all,
Since I have had my mitts on a U.S version of Metroid prime 3 I , thought I'd let you all in on it with a small review, also I am fairly rubbish at this so please be gentle with me……
Graphics
As you all know the Wii, is not known for its graphical oomph when compared to the other next generation behemoths, however this is irrelevant when you actually explore the different worlds Metroid 3 has to offer .As they are very well designed and extremely colourful, and you will soon forget the fact that they could be done on a Gamecube.
Also worth a mention are the excellent end of level boss Designs as well as the different pirate troopers, which show just how much effort has gone into them.
Sound
As with previous Metroid games sound is also important and with Metroid 3 it doesn't disappoint, with brilliant tunes accompanying the different worlds , it's as good as the Metroid one soundtrack, also supplying the familiar buzz that a power up gives when you enter a particular room.
Gameplay
Now this ones the biggie to which we are all asking Is the wii controls going to work ? And the resounding answer is YES!!!! The wii mote and nunchuk are so intuitive and fluid you will get used to it about 5 minutes after starting, every button is used on the wii mote and by the middle of the game it feels like they are extension of your hands, which the game will have you twisting rotating and pulling the wii mote like a expert, and makes the traditional joypads seem outdated and clumsy.
As for the gameplay it is more like Metroid one than Metroid two(ie no light/dark worlds), where it’s a case of exploring the maps and finding various power ups ,also there is back tracking/scanning , but which are connected to the story so there's no sense of backtracking/scanning for the sake of it.
Overall.
Retro studios have taken the story at a different angle which to be fair is a brave choice rather than a disaster some other reviews have stated. Also to the horror of metroid purists they have introduced
Speaking parts for game characters which is different to Other metroid games but somehow it works.
Overall a hugely enjoyable game to which the nunchuk and wii mote truly revolutionise the way we play games today. The game may not have the shiny new graphics of the next generation but has enough ideas to Hold its own.To which in todays ideas free gaming world is no small feat.
9.5/10

9.5/10
It's got an average of 9.3 on metacritic, the lowest review so far is Edge's 7/10 which incidently is the only review I've read so far. I don't have a wii and I didn't enjoy Metroid Prime I found the tracking back and forth quite boring and the shooting mechanics also were uninspiring. Edge said that the new shooting mechanics are excellent which appeals to me but I still wouldn't be interested overall. There is still no game out there that would convince me to get a wii. Then again Nintendo don't need me, they are selling like hot cakes

Yeah I was a little shocked by it - let me see if I can paraphrase it for you...
They weren't impressed by the start - "it spends half its length recovering from an opening so badly misjudged that you fear developer Retro has forgotten everything that makes Metroid special and run dry of all inspiration."
"Masterful controls aside, Corruption sees Retro lost for a while, like Samus, down some mystifying and convoluted dead-end of its own making, populating a universe that should have stayed desolate and dead. Eventually it does emerge as a substantial and beautifully engineered adventure, a worthy and welcome Wii blockbuster. But as the conclusion of a trilogy that started so brilliantly, it can't help but disappoint."

I can actually understand what they mean by that. The best aspect for me in the games is the atmosphere created by the sense of isolation. By the sounds of it some of this is lost in the opening levels of the game. Regardless the review score seems too harsh.YoshiKart64 wrote:Edge don't seem to realise that Metroid Prime is already out and with Prime 3 people want something different. I laugh at this 'Masterful controls aside'....
Only one of the main things for this new installment of Metroid Prime yet it's Matserful but let's just put that aside and well y'know sweep that bit under the carpet so then we can y'know make some negative comments about the overpopulated universe, well what do you think huh?

I sort of think the Edge review seemed to have a point- they do gush over the second half of the game and their worries seem to be that the initial part felt like an attempt at a more Halo-esque title and seemed to ignore the very thing that make Metroid Prime be Metroid Prime, rather than Generic Space Shooter # 87.
They did pretty much the same with their Bioshock review, which actually read like the reviwer hated the game, until you bumped into the 8/10 score at the end. However most of their criticisms were spot on (and I'm someone who thinks Bioshock is a clear winner of game of the year) and the review didn't suffer from them taking a critical viewpoint. The same criteria didn't seem to apply to their review of Halo 3 though, which seems to apologise for any flaws in the single player and then gloss over them in a rush for that perfect ten score.

Damned if you do damned if you dont. I seem to remember people complaining that Echos was little more than an add on to the first prime game.
I dont really understand it really, early previews of the game in edge suggested that this new setting was welcome. Still though its nice to see reviewers being a bit more objective. If only it were applied across the board (im looking at you Halo 3 10/10 score).

It does raise an interesting point about Wii games in general for me:given that the control scheme and success in implementation thereof is so crucial, when will games for the system start being judged on their success solely as games and not on their ability to master and/or shoehorn controls around a system that is not yet second nature to us all?
Just a thought, I speak as a non Wii owner (yet) and am quite possibly talking ballocks.
