I think hookers and drugs are the main attractions in Amsterdam, best starting there I think.

Don't smoke too much tho - I went about ten years ago and I don't have one memory of the holiday. I can remember checking in and going to the first cafe and then thats it - I arrived home two days later :)

Someone from work went a few years back and when he got there it was a gay pride week or something ! Be careful if its next week

Also isnt Dance valley held in or near Amsterdam? Supposed to be good there , I think its one of the largest dance music festivals in Europe .

Don't buy pre-rolled, try to be respectful of Amsterdam's very friendly and relaxed citizens (including its prostitutes and sex shop staff - it's not a freak show) and support the smaller independent coffee shops.

My drummer's currently in Amsterdam - I hope he makes it out alive, he's notoriously hedonistic (as the stereotypical drummer is). I don't want to go looking for another one.

There's a real cool bar to hang out in called "planet rock". it's at one end of the streets parallel to the red light district (one before not after). They have great staff, rock memorabilia and dvd's/cd's of nearly every decent rock band playing in the background.
Don't go to the Banana bar it's a crap hole!
In town, opposite the station, there's an alley way with a quality retro games shop. I've never seen a shop with as many NES games.
The sex museum, on the main road from the station (not the one in red light district), is a brilliant laugh.
Heineken brewery is alright, fresh premium heiny is actually very nice.
Van gogh museum is worty going to, unless you couldn't care less about art.
Warning!! the girls in RED LIGHT DISTRICT are damn nice. I won't admit to visiting any, wouldn't remember anyway.
Warning!! Stay away from street dealers, some get quite violent.
It's easy to get lost when hammered  I spent a few hours trying to find my B+B, walked so far i couldn't stand up the next morning.

Otherwise have fun 8)

Go to the Anne Frank House. Very good for a little perspective...
