TopGear Shuttle

Post by ScotsWahey » Sun Feb 18, 2007 9:00 pm

Oh my god that was fecking awesome. I thought it would be like one of the usual rocket launches you see on tv. A missfire followed by a puff of white smoke. But that thing was a proper launch.

Best series of topgear ever.

I have a great interest in space exploration, so was this a full sized or scale model rocket. Also what is this Top Gear show? Anything like 5th Gear? We get 5th Gear on Speed Channel, I love that show.

5th gear is like a shitty rip off of top gear,
Top Gear is class, the rocket was actually a reliant robin car.

True, was a very good episode, but the rest of the series is going to struggle to beat the America episode for me.

It was awesome. I too expected a lot of smoke and then a big fire. But the launch was like watching a real shuttle launch, right up until it lost control and pounded into the ground. How they got that past health & safety I dont know. I'm sure a clip will appear on YouTube soon.

It was totally awesome!! This series has been the best so far, Whenit was on the Pad (i.e. scafolding lol ) it just looked like it wouldnt do anything, then it did! 1 bolt was all that stopped it from detatching from the fuel pod!!

The challenge was to launch a rocket with a car strapped to it. There had to be booster seperation followed by shuttle seperation. Then the shuttle had to land safely. The rocket guys said it was impossible but eventually they came up with a plan. They got the biggest non commercial rocket money could buy, strapped a reliant robin to it (that was painted white and had wings welded on). They put the whole thing through wind tunnel tests and got a remote control pilot to fly the thing. It launched, went straight up in the air, booster seperation but the shuttle didnt release. There was a fault with a bolt or something so it went out of control and headed for the deck. Biggest explosion ever but it was great.

Theres a clip here from last weeks show but unfortunatley it doesnt show the launch just the shuttle.

Loved that, i was so excited when it was in the air and when it was coming back down. Did anyone watch the America one where they were being chased, even i felt scared for some reason

That rocket was awesome, shame that last part did not work.
Also did any body else think the modified reliant looked cool, and want one for themselves.

If somebody said to me 10 yesars ago topgear would be one of the funniest shows on tv I would have laughed at them, In a way i miss the normal stuff they used to do. maybe they need 2 shows.

A weekday Traditional style Top Gear and The Sunday edition as is.

I've watched every episode of topgear since the age of about 8 and I honestly dont miss the old format one bit. Just watch 5th gear and its exactly like TopGear used to be. Well actually thats not true because theyre trying to copy TopGear now by setting it in a cafe and being more informal.

Video of the shuttle launch,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aw5SHleYB5s

For those that didn't watch it, the guy holding the remote control......the idea was that when the car separated from the fuel tank, he would guide it down with the remote, he was some world champion model aeroplane expert or something.

I was gutted when it didn't separate :(
