Online Achievements (360) - Unsung Heroes

Post by Somerset Bumpkin » Wed Jan 24, 2007 10:20 am

This is something thats been getting on my tits recently as it seems to become more and more common. I'm not sure if it's M$ guidlines or what.

But........Why the fudge can't you earn achievements in player (as opposed to ranked) matches. I play on live a lot. It's generally with a mix of the same people (from this forum and NL). I'm no achievement whore but I would like a bit of friggin acknowledgment for the time.

The worst part of the live experience is ranked matches with dick-head teens (not just yanks BTW), I play to enjoy the game and the best way of doing that is with people you know - either via player matches or the Halo party system.

I think M$ take the achievements to seriously - if people want to cheat to get the achievements then let 'em - who gives a shit thats their bag, and they will find a way to. But i would like some of the achievements because I earn them too and i don't want to run the ranked gauntlet in order to do so.

rant over

totally agree with you on this, there should be achievements for player matches, not just ranked matches. As you say, most times when you play ranked matches it's against total arseholes, that slag you off, camp you, etc. As most achivements are 100 kills,so many matches etc., after a few against these pillocks, you can't be arsed and go back to playing with your mates. This really does need sorting...

Yeah I agree.

At the end of the day, you're only cheating yourself if you take it in turns to shoot each other for the points and that's not fun.

Half the point of Live is the social aspect, the games are pretty much just a meeting place for us all where we get together, talk shit, drink beer and shoot each other. The few times I have wandered into ranked matches, nobody really talks, if they do it's trash, you may as well be playing against bots.

I assume you're referring to Gears of War?

Some games do give you achievements for player matches, such as G.R.A.W, for instance.

Yeah some do. But recently it's a growing problem. In the early days the achievements were all offline as well

It seems crazy to me that games like King Kong and Fight Night let you grab 1000 gamerpoints in ten hours or less, yet people who prefer social rather than competetive online games are left out of the achievement thing. I mean, some of these achievements would be hard enough (1000 headshots / 100 grenade tags etc...) among friends. So a few people would cheese them and spend two hours getting 25 points... so what? Let them!

Still, I'd rather lose out than play ranked games. I only really play on Live at the weekend, and I have a top friends list (you know who you are!). It'd be nice getting a headshot on Papa on Vegas and hearing the familiar puuhlop of achievement unlocked though.

I couldn't agree more, SB. It pisses me off that you can spend hour after hour killing and being killed and for no tangiable reward in the form of unlocking an achievement. It make the term "achievement" a bit of a misnomer really as you can achieve a hell of a lot... but no achievement!

I can understand the thinking behind it. However, er, who really gives a s**t if the guys with 7 billlion achievement points are cheating a bit to get more? It's not like you can turn them into cash or anything! The number of achievement points I have in relation to others means nothing to me. I like to "complete" a game and get 1,000 point but, like with Amped 3, if it's too much like hard work, I won't bother!

Yeah it gets to me 2. If you really cant abide ranked matches then ur missing out on a good few achievments for a lot of games. Lost Planet springs to mind.

it is annoying, i personally don't like achievements anyway i find them incredibly pointless. i prefer to be rewarded for doing well by unlocking something new.

take ninja gaiden on the xbox, by completeing it properly and finding the scarabs i unlocked ninja gaiden 1,2 & 3! now thats worth it in my opinion. if it would have said "well done you have 50 points", the same as basically holding the controller correctly in the likes of king kong, i would have been very pissed off

I think they should be on player matches because:

All the people who think having loads of achievements makes their e-penis bigger will come up with ways to get them anyway
Everyone who buys games simply for achievements will buy this game, so they'll all get the achievements, so none will have an advantage.

Therefore, all the people who play FOR FUN, can play and have fun, and earn an achievement on the way too.

i don't really see the point in them full stop. i gave up bothering after 1000. don't mind for beating levels/games, but i can't be arsed to find cog tags (for example). i'd prefer to unlock extra content and secrets.

I like how Lost Planet has extra content to unlock (character skins and models) via on line games, it almost makes slogging through loads of shit ranked matches worth the while, if only there was a little bit more.
a computer once beat me at chess but it was no match for me at kickboxing

I really like the achivements. That is when they really do represent an achivement. They can arguably add more to your game, for example, my friends and i are a rather close knit group and although no one has directly said anything we all compete for bragging rights over what achivements we have.

im currently replaying dead rising so i can subtly mention my unlocking of the Gourmet achivement :)

I quite like the achievments. From another slant i think they can make me play a game in a different way.

There have been games that i have played alot of, and in the past would then have left the game for a while. Certain achievements have made continue with the game to try and unlock. Geometry Wars is a small example, with the survive for 60 seconds without shooting achievment.

Call of Duty 3 achievments have made me go back and try and finish a level without dying or using only melee attacks. I would never have even considered doing this with games in the past.

And if i get them i think "yeah, quite enjoyed achieving that".......
