Sonic Racing: Run Rings Round’em

Post by maf-me-quick » Tue Jun 12, 2018 8:09 pm

Someone asked me about this. I just watched the trailer. Honestly seems like a backstep compared to Sega Racers Transformed 2 or whatever it was called. That was a surprisingly brilliant kart racer.

This seems lacking judging by the trailer. No transforming karts. No other Sega brands. No crazy clashes. The last racing game’s big gimmick was it was fucking wild and they made it work for them. This seems tame in comparison and that leaves me less excited.

Completely agree. Just focusing on Sonic characters is a major step in the wrong direction IMO. I loved the various Sega characters, stages and fanfare in Transformed. Felt like a real love letter to Sega fans, which we get hardly any of compared to Nintendo stuff. It had a great robust single player mode too which kept me playing for a long, long, looong time. And why I preferred it to MK. Plus it just felt more fair and skill based.
They handled the transforming stuff brilliantly too, I’d have loved to see more of it.
This went from being one of my most anticipated games when I first heard about it to not really caring now.

I think it shouldn't be understated the advantage of having a unified theme. SEGA Racing, while cool, was a bit of a hodge-podge of stuff. Having tracks, but more importantly, power-ups, that feel like they're part of a unified world is something that makes the Mario Kart games feel more together.

But I do hope it means SEGA bring back their other characters in other things... maybe their own things.

Ive never felt Mario Kart felt unified either though. Most of the tracks in MK8 could be from completely different games as far as I’m concerned. A airport in Mario? Let’s be honest the track based on Yoshi nothing thing like the ones based on Mario in a theme sense.
Plus I didn’t really care about that at all. Especially when I got amazing tracks such as the Afterburner, Samba, Skies of Arcadia and Panzer Dragoon ones. I loved them!
Plus I’d MUCH rather play as the Golden Axe dwarf than Shadow. Unity be damned!

The Afterburner 2 stage is the one that c9mes to mind first as well. That stage is awesome.

Personally, I'm more interested to get a game with an approximation of those Outrun 2 physics that the other games had; and this one at least looks to have them too.

Fair enough, Outrun 2 was amazing. Spent many hours doing the challenges on the original Xbox version. That handling model was nearly flawless at what it was trying to do. From what I remember anyways

I tried playing Outrun 2 once but couldn’t get past the first menu. Literally could not find the right combination of buttons to get to the racing part
