The millennial thread

Post by One-armed dwarf » Mon Mar 19, 2018 9:51 am

Post millennial stuff here.

That includes articles moaning about lefties on college campuses @jeem :)

I will start, I found this one interesting. Found it on resetera

Some millennials aren’t saving for retirement because they don’t think capitalism will exist by then
https://www.salon.com/2018/03/18/some-m ... t-by-then/

Some argue that this is due to proliferation of gig-based type work. Short term contracts and Uber/Lyft type stuff. Others that there's no point because we are on the cusp of this big economic apocalypse that'll be brought out by widespread tech automation of jobs that used to be only performable by humans.

Others that we are way too pre-occupied with material stuff and aren't good at long-term thinking.

Then there's the promise of UBI (universal benefit) which tbh does kind of need to happen when there won't be enough jobs for everyone to perform.

Also the sheer unfeasability of saving for a deposit.

Personally think all sides have some validity but the idea of not saving cause the world's economy might explode seems kinda like setting your house on fire cause a meteor might hit it.

I do know some old-coworker folk around late-20s/early-mid thirties (ie, millennials) who do actually buy into this 'death of capitalism' thing, some I suspect are unironic Marxists. Yet they are all quite highly paid (way more than I am :( ) so they can afford those fantasies I guess.

Why do you think you aren't a millennial? Is this a pisstake or are you genuine in denial over it?

Did I tell anyone I own the domain millennials.zone?

Cuz I'm a millennial I throw money away on stupid domains all the time.

I need some ideas for a millennial themed website befitting of the name millennials.zone

millennial.zone was taken sadly and oddly redirects to this Giantbomb twitter thing :(

You can Wikipedia me all you like millennial is a life style. One that I don’t have. I wish I were a millennial, so i could read books and eat healthy and go to the gym and socialise and know about things and be educated and casually fuk. But I don’t any of these things so I am not it.

Let me tell you about video games tho.

You know that millennials are apparently the fattest generation in a long time so they/we don't eat healthy at all.

Also millennials have the worst attention span and don't read (unless it's Harry Potter  ).

Millennials have less sex than previous generations.

You are conflating 'millennial' with cool, stylish young people like you see in your university. Most of whom are probably too young to be millennial

I'm serious tho suggestions for millennials.zone

As you two are really annoying with your millennial stuff I went to wikipedia to check what that actually means.

So basically everyone born in the 80s and who likes technology and gay people is a millennial. So technically I'm one as well.

I don't have a smartphone though which might be a dealbreaker. Not so sure about that yet.

Millennials are classic for not ever wanting to be held accountable for anything, always blaming others.

But I started this one genuinely cause the economickey implications for our generation and our supposed unpreparedness for it all is interesting I reckon.

A checklist then?

1) So I'm not fat and eat healthily.

2) I often read High Concept sci-fi and usually read about 5 books at once (not including manga, comics and graphic novels). I also loathe Harry Potter. So that's a 'no' too.

3) A lot more frequently since becoming single. More than most of my attached friends also. So I would say 'no' to that also.

4) I am neither cool nor stylish. I view clothes as functional only.

Personally I don't abide by this label, attached retroactively. It's often used in the same derogatory manner as 'Chav' was. I was born in the 80's and a child of the 90's, that's it. I refuse arbitrary labels. My personal take on it is 'Millennial' should apply to those born after the year 2000? Otherwise it makes no sense.
