Wii accessories price hike galore

Post by -Jay- » Thu Dec 21, 2006 8:56 pm

Out christmas shopping today, I thought I'd have a look in a few shops stocking Wii bits as I need an RGB cable and another nunchuk. Jesus. Game want 24 quid for an RGB cable (RRP 18 quid I believe) and 17.99 for a nunchuk (RRP 14.99). Even worse, HMV want 24.99 for an RGB cable.

Surely this level of opportunist price hiking due to stock shortage can't be legal?

I know, it's crazy. Why sell the Wiimote and nunchuck separately?. By the time you have the Wii and all of the stuff you need, you could have afforded a PS3! *Sarcasm*

Sarcasm aside, it *does* take it up to 360 level pricing though :(

Thats where Nintendo have been clever (well...sly)! . Selling the console at a lower price but ripping you off with all the rest of the bits .

It's not just nintendo though. Because there's a shortage of RGB leads, HMV are selling them for 7 quid more than they should be. Such a rip off.

The retailers are doing a bit of price-upping. Some stores are selling Wii points at higher than the going rate.

I noticed some stuff at the shop i work in to be higher than I originally thought, but I'm sure selling Wii points higher than the usual rate is a bit shady, it's like buying money only in point form.

I bought my Wii RGB cable for £23 from GAME, I had no idea what the RRP was.

I think the RRP of the RGB Scart is £19.99, as they have been tacking on an extra 3 quid on all the accessories.

Not just the Wii accessories that they are bumping up.

The prices for GC games etc in my local independent have had a huge bump.

They are probably bumping up the price of Wii accessories because they are still very rare and people will pay the higher price through fear they might not get them from elsewhere.

There's probably been more interest in GameCube games since the Wii launch, hence their price increase.

I also think the price of the controllers is a bit much, at recommend retail price if you bought all 3 major controllers it would cost you £60! which is £35 more than the Xbox/GameCube/PS2 controllers.

Why do you think Wii only comes bundled with Wii sports?.

Its a multi-player game and Ninty are making their profit on the sale of peripherals. You pretty much have to have at least one extra Wiimote and Nunchuk to enjoy the Wii properly.

What with all the shortages its pretty much expected that retailers will bang a premium on items if people are willing to pay the money.
Where they could come unstuck is post Xmas when things are abundant and people decide 'I'm not going back there, its too expensive' and start buying elsewhere.

I just got my 2nd nunchuck in HMV today for €24.99, which seems roughly the equivilant of £17.99. To be honest, it seems everytime i go to buy something Wii related it's out of stock at Game and HMV have loads at about €10 cheaper.

I also saw Oblivion (PC) for €29.99 in several stores and Fallout 1 + 2 bundle for the price of €20 or 2 for €30 - not bad, huh? I'll probably pick up both in the new year (especially fallout after reading the RPG Bible). Oh yeah and Disgaea 2 was widely available although at €44.99 i think i'll wait 'till it drops a little. I guess this is the benefit of the next gen - cheaper current gen. :)

On a similar note but slightly Off Topic, play.com have started their sale and some of their stuff is very, very good for the money atm.

I saw Virgin selling Wiimotes for £25 each last weekend and went back a few days later to buy one only to find they had gone up to £30, kicked myself for not getting one earlier!
Get wiv it.
