Re: The end of entertainment shops?
Yeah GS are terrible also. I've tried bartering over the price of the pre-owned stuff a couple of times. Mostly when I see the pre-owned at a higher price than the same game brand new.
Would they budge, would they ****.
It's OK, they obviously don't want my money.

Re: The end of entertainment shops?
I like browsing HMV, I sometimes buy games there but mostly use it for buying DVDs, the Carlisle branch is small and doesn't stock the type of music I like so I only use it for games and films. Usually scanning the 5 for £20 section.
I hope that branch doesn't go as there are **** all places for me to kill time on the high street while the significant other browses BHS. I've even bought games from HMV; I bought Blur for £30, I knew damn well it was £25 online but desire is a moment in time, I may not want the game in 2 - 3 days. So I thought '**** it' and bought it. I'm not letting £5 come between me and something I want, I'm not letting £5 dictate impulsive pleasure. **** £5. I'm not Scrooge, I don't want to become a penny hoarding, miserable cunt. I don't want to visited by spirits in the night, they don't offer wisdom and insight anymore, I've seen clips of Paranormal Activity, they make you murder your family...
So yeah, lame I think.

Re: The end of entertainment shops?
I try not to be a miser with regard to the prices I pay for new games, but being so on the ball with regard to bargains and knowing that probably 75% of games get a price drop within 4-8 weeks at the moment does make me feel a bit tight. It's like a built-in thing now. I really want LBP2, but some friends on another forum keep shouting how LBP1 had big discounts really quickly and that LBP2'll probably be the same, which makes me hesitant to get it on release. It doesn't help either that I am a bit brassic at the moment, but then I have no qualms about spending probably £10-15 on general junk food each week. Bah; I don't know. I'm so bloody indecisive.

Re: The end of entertainment shops?
I'm tempted to think LBP2 will hold it's price given that I reckon a lot of gamers who held out last time will be far more keen for the new game now they no what it can do. And, on the other hand, I'd sooner pay full price on release to feel like I can support these niche studios rather hold out for the price drop and see the studio hit the skids six months later.
Though with all the DLC etc and SONY's backing that may not be a problem for MM.

Yeah; that's a big part of it - I'd rather pay a little more and reward a studio for their bravery and creativity with a title like LBP or 3D DGH or what-have-you, than buy another 'safe' cookie-cutter sequel in some mega-franchise or other.
Re: The end of entertainment shops?
I would say considering LBP2 is a sequel, there is a PSP version and weekly DLC in the form of t-shirts and stickers that you don't need to lose sleep worrying that MM won't be able to feed their kids if you wait for it to come down to £20-30. I'm sure there are other studios out there that are working hard and don't have one of the biggest corporations in the world backing them. Buy their game full price instead.

Re: The end of entertainment shops?
At the end of the day, if you're going to get the enjoyment out of the game, then it's well worth paying full price for it on day one. If it were something you'd only play for a weekend and then put on the shelf, then perhaps not, but if you'll still be playing it in three / six / twelve months time them it's money well spent!
With a game like LBP with such open-ended gameplay, you get out what you put into it. If you're that way inclined to sit there for hours perfecting your ideal level or recreating another game within the game, then RRP is a small price to pay.
I really don't understand why the price of the original LBP dropped so much in such a short period of time, especially given the hype. As far as I know, it received stellar reviews, and it's not a bad game by anyone's standards. I just don't think a lot of people "Got it", and most weren't expecting to have to put so much effort into it. Personally, I would rate it as one of the Top 10 exclusive games worth owning a PS3 for!

I think you're right by saying no one 'got' LBP, so i think now people know what it is and how good it is, it should stay around the RRP.
Re: The end of entertainment shops?
The actual gameplay in LBP is shit. Thats why I didnt 'get' it. All that creativity, variety & charm was for nothing as Sackboy is just awful to control. Plus im not at all creative & my time is short so the main part of the game may as well not exist for someone like me.

I think it's a great game but like you, i wouldn't have the time to be creative - i'd much rather be killin' stuff

Reason was this:
1. On day before release, sony announce they are pulling it due to lyrical content which may be offensive to small segregation of users (who had already confirmed they didn't find it offensive).
2. Lots of non-gamer type customers turn up hoping to buy said game - get told its been pulled and we don't know when it will be released
3. GAME (and other stores I presume) reciveve their updated copies, which they'd already paid for, and so ordered in enough for that FIRST release date.
4. It goes on sale normally, theres no huge announcement, people trickle in buying it when they remember "Oh yeah I wanted to buy that! - but something weird happened when I tried the first time"
5. Due to the HUGE stock holding, because no one brought it on day one the price drops to shift "old" stock.
To be honest, I think its a testament to the game to have done as well as it has, after the huge screw up that Sony pulled when it was meant to be released.
Re: The end of entertainment shops?
With regards to HMV closing stores, isnt it mostly Waterstones stores which will be affected (20 HMV, 40 Waterstones). HMV can suck a bag of dicks due to all the reasons mentioned above (and they stopped selling vinyl a few years back at which point I stopped going in there) but ANOTHER book store closing, damn. I almost cried when Borders closed down.
"Sorry, sorry, I know you disapprove of swearing so I'll sort that out. You are a boring F, star, star, CUNT!"

Re: The end of entertainment shops?
You might be right about the 20 HMV 40 Waterstones shop closure, surely it's the tip of the iceberg though?
Well done djsmiley, i had totally forgotten about that. Did all those removed copies go in the bin or were you able to grab one? Be a nice thing to have

Re: The end of entertainment shops?
Seems strange that the originator of this thread will now praise one of these shops - namely GAME. After ordering the Halo Reach Legendary edition online i recieved an email two days later to say the order had been cancelled due to my card details being wrong - my own stupid fault. Checked online straight away - no stock, i begin tearing my hairout and banging my head on the keyboard.
Next day, i phone GAME (fingers were crossed) and hurrah! they have two left! The nice chap said he'd hold one for me so after work i hurry down there an embrace it
And i also picked up Metroid: Other M for £9.99 Happy days and for once i'm thankful that i have these local shops.
