Trimmings being blu ray, X-box live etc
While My wii makes a nice book-end to my TV on the left, I still keep an eye out for my PS3 book-end on the right...love them equally really.

giantbombs video review. says exactly what it does in the written one, but you don't have to read white text on a black back ground. which is always good.
oh, yeah. a bunch of little game play moments as well. god damn if it doesn't look incredible.

super mario galaxy 2 just became the most critically acclaimed game ever?
seems to be confusion in the stats, maybe not been updated yet, but it says numero uno on the list.

I will pick this up eventually once I have got through my stack of 360 titles. Loved the first one, and the first Wii title I've been interested in buying for quite awhile. Shame there won't be a new Zelda for Christmas, but I can hope....

Re: Super Mario Galaxy 2
To be honest the first one bored me to death. Sure the visuals were nice and blasting from planet to planet was invigorating but it was just Mario 64 in space. You've got all of the recurring enemies, no alterations to the platforming and its the same old regurgitated plot with a few new things super imposed onto the old canvas.
Bowser kidnaps Peach
Mario goes on huge quest to save her
Mario saves her
Everything is fine for a month or two and then she gets abducted AGAIN! ARGH!
I don't expect anything new and enticing from this installment.

Re: Super Mario Galaxy 2
you nuts? the whole point of the game is to mess with gravity, or course that screws with the platforming, and how is it like mario 64 exactly?Shannen the Manic wrote:, no alterations to the platforming

Re: Super Mario Galaxy 2
Surely that should be a good thing though? The amazing thing about Mario games (IMO) is that everytime you pick one up, you pretty much know exactly what you're getting, but it's always such a well put together slice of awesometastic platforming. Someone said a while back on here that it's like the immensely pure gaming feeling when you play a mario game that you don't always get with other games and to me that's true.Shannen the Manic wrote:

The minute you start switching up the formula is the day it stops being pure Mario goodness. That's what we have Mario and Luigi RGP, Paper Mario and Mario Kart for afterall.
Re: Super Mario Galaxy 2
Usually when you play a Nintendo game you already know what to expect. That's the whole point of it. The thing that keeps you playing though is the fact that they manage to change the game enough each times to either keep up with the times as well as keep people interested throughout the game.
I'm not a mega fan of Nintendo or anything. I enjoy their games enough but I don't start rocking in my chair out of excitement at anything announced related to them but you have to give them credit for what they have done, are doing and what they will probably do in the future.

With total honesty I can say I hated Mario 64(won't go into details, there are many reasons) Rare easily trumped it with Banjo-Kazooie. But I enjoyed Galaxy, admittedly I don't go for every star as one of my issues with 3D mario is I don't think having to repeat a level 5-8 times is good game design, just lazy - It felt fresher to me than Mario has in a long time and so I look forward to the next one, with the same reservations I always have none the less.

repeating the level isn't lazy, you start off in the same place, but you always end up somewhere different.

Re: Super Mario Galaxy 2
I've put in some solid time into this game now and have 17 stars.
I was skeptical about the decision to take away the hub world (Nintendo basically made that their own after all), but I can see it was a good decision now. Galaxy's and even Sunshine's hubs weren't particularly good anyway, a least in comparison with 64, so he impact of it was much smaller less than I'd expected. The game is also very much the looker and proof that other Wii developers need a kick up the backside, although it seems to have that odd fuzziness when it renders fur, like most Gamecube/Wii games. It's not bad, per se, it's just at odds with the rest of the game.
The only thing that irks so far is Nintendo's frustrating decision to map the spin to waggle, rather than to a button. That's got me killed a number of times already, particularly on one tricky platforming section. Eventually I dropped the spin for that bit entirely and stuck with longjumps instead.
Bloody fantastic; the ideas behind every single mechanic are incredibly simple but gloriously satisfying, and there are so many different ideas on display, so many ways of interacting with the levels.

Purposely making you re-enter the level after each indidivual Star/Shine, instead of just carrying on till the end, is lazy design.
