DJ Haze - Anasazi D&B Mix [Consequence/Instra:mental etc]

Post by hazeyhaze » Wed Mar 03, 2010 8:44 am

For any D&B heads in the vacinity I'm cross-posting this here. An hour of material a little different to my usual output which focusses on the more minimal, atmospheric, sub bass heavy side of the scene.

I don't understand the current 'minimal' trend. I work with DJ's and thats all they talk about :?

Maybe they're just into the music

I could write you an essay about minimal, the reasons for it's current success, why it doesn't really work on the dancefloor but is great as listening music etc etc etc... but really I just cross-posted this here on the off chance some might enjoy a bit of it

Minimal i can understand - it's dubstep i can't stomach. Will check this out at lunch!

Just out of curiosity - what set up do you use for mixing?

You can get minimal dubstep as well you know :P

Really, you cant just pigeon-hole a genre just because you've heard a few tracks. There are so many different styles of music for each genre - which is great! I dont really like drum and bass that much but stuff like this is right up my (back)alley

Haze, have you listened to the Dbridge and Instra:Mental podcasts at all ?

As for my setup, there's been much chopping and changing over the years, used to use a variety of CDJ accompaniments to regular vinyl but I’ve been settled with this for a couple of years now:

Technics 1210mk2 decks
Ortofon Concorde DJS styli (Digitracks pictured but I don’t use them anymore)
Serato Scratch SL1 (mp3-vinyl hardware & software)
Ecler Nuo5 Mixer
Sennheiser HD25 headphones
Eltax monitors
Customised DJ unit from http://www.djdeckstands.com (surprisingly cheap)

Studio sets are hyper-perfected and edited with software processing before producing the final mix, but you can hear me broadcast 100% live every 1st Monday at http://www.bassdrive.com 7-9 GMT if you want to

Yeah D&B is one of those genres that has so many sub genres it's unreal. Dig a little deeper beyond the outer coating of Andy C or Grooverider and you find almost unfathomable depth really. My primary interest for DJing and my label is dancefloor friendly deep stuff, which can take influences from soul, techno, dub, house, trance... It's endless and that's why it keeps my interest. I do get a little tired of pigeon-holing as when people get too pent-up about labelling or focussing on a genre they can miss out on so much.

The Autonomic podcasts are brilliant Skev, I love how Instra & DBridge seem to play pretty much anything and get away with it, a good friend of mine (ASC) is at the forefront of the Autonomic sound with those guys and one of the most exciting things about it is how their influences and boundaries have totally broken away from the norm, creating music so fluid and unpredictable, it really is brilliant. As I insinuated earlier, a lot of it isn’t really dance music, and in a way it shouldn’t be labelled as D&B at all, but the whole thing is still in its infancy.

I've heard enough to know that it's just not for me! Just my opinion, like.

No seriously mate, really like the mix, where are you based? There's a night I'm playing at in Brighton that might be right up your street.

I'm in Newcastle I'm afraid but I do have friends in Brighton, also used to live in Tunbridge Wells for a spell... Might be down that way sometime again someday

Yeah of course! my response was just more of knee-jerk reaction :) Also, if you compare dubstep to Evil Nine - Crooked then it is a load of shit :D :D

Haze your setup is sexy. Makes me very jealous.

Have you herad the Autonomic fabriclive ? I thought it was ace. Their "sound" is so colourful and night-time/dreamy. The influences part of their podcasts are excellent as well, some real gems in there.

I saw the animated video for "Crooked" on MTV in Egypt a few years ago, sandwiched between loads of strange Arabic pop.

What made it extra odd is that it was recorded in a studio behind my restaurant and I took them a pizza while they were making it a few weeks before.

Loved Fabriclive 50, it's best enjoyed during a walk on a miserable rainy evening with the headphones :D

Favourite tune on there was Consequence's remix of ASC - Starkwood, but the tracklist actually has the title of 5 and 6 the wrong way round, so 5 is the Starkwood remix and 6 is the Vaccine tune. Some of the best CD's have tracklist glitches though. We actually made an identical mistake on our last CD release, luckily the artists saw the funny side

Just gave this mix a listen - nice work - reminded me of Kruder and Dorfmeisters DJ Kicks.
