World of Warcraft no longer requires a game purchase, just a subscription

All of World of Warcraft’s available content — aside from the soon to be released Battle for Azeroth expansion — is now included in the game’s $14.99 monthly subscription fee. The Battle Chest — which used to include the base game and all previous expansions — is no longer available for purchase in Blizzard’s online shop. This change appears to be permanent.

Players, new and old, can now sign up for a subscription and play all the way through Legion, World of Warcraft’s sixth expansion. This change comes shortly after the pre-patch for Battle for Azeroth, World of Warcraft’s seventh expansion, which is scheduled to be released on Aug. 14.

This change lowers the barrier to entry for World of Warcraft, which has typically required that players purchase the base game to play. As long as players pay their monthly subscription, they can play all the way through level 110 without purchasing anything additional. However, for players who become interested in playing the latest and greatest World of Warcraft content, Battle for Azeroth will still cost a one-time fee of $49.99.

The Elder Scrolls Online Is Free to Play for the Next Six Days on PS4

Ever wanted to give The Elder Scrolls Online a try without spending a penny? Bethesda has your back. The publisher has announced that, as part of its QuakeCon celebrations, the MMO will be made available to all free of charge for the next six days.

This starts today -- Thursday 9th August -- at 10am EST / 7am PDT / 3pm BST. The free event will go on until Wednesday 15th August at 10am EST / 7am PDT / 3pm BST. Included is the Elder Scrolls Online base game in its entirety, as well as the Vvardenfell area, which should keep you very busy during the six day period. If you already own the main game but haven't purchased Vvardenfell, you'll be able to access this expansion for free as well. And don't fret about PlayStation Plus either - you won't need a subscription to Sony's service to take part.

FF14 is on sale but is it a subscription based thing or do you just buy and play?

You get 30 days free. Then sub.

But the sub means it gets great content support, unlike non sub games like Destiny and division

Just compare the value with something like ps plus where you get bad broken games like mafia III. Way better than that.

It is very very good. Best final fantasy since VII.

Tho you have to work to get to the really good parts.

I heard you can fight Kefka in it now as part of a raid, that sounds crazy. Maybe I should resub 🤔

One thing to say I suppose is that it's been a year since the last expansion so community is probably in a lull. Also WoW got a new release so the community is definitely in a lull.

I know it’s just part of what it is but Zi don’t like the idea of subbing to specific games. It’s too much of a commitment to something I might not even like or not use all of.

There is a free trial for 30 days that costs no moneys at all. Think it allows you to get to level 30 or something like that, maybe it's higher now.

Also if you do like it it very easily becomes the main game you play. Like these are games that they never stop development for, it's not the sort of thing you dip 20 hours into and leave alone unless you don't like it at all

Yeah I might not even play it within 30 days. I got games on my shelf that are years old that I just take my time to get to. I feel like the way I play games doesn’t mix well with MMO’s generally, especially time based ones

Well I mean either you play it now or you dont, It's all the same, there is always going to be a free trial either way depending on when you get on. Just don't start the free trial clock and create an account until you've actually decided it's a thing that you'd play.

People don't stay subbed to these forever, they drop out during content droughts and come back on later.

Ultimately I feel like my time with XIV is maybe the best value proposition I've ever had with a game, even if I've had lull periods where I stay subbed and don't play as much as I'd intend.

Compared with full budget releases at £50 like Wolfenstein which I play for 3 hours then throw in the bin, or even good games like GoW which I've no intention of returning to.
