I see that this should be quiet easy to do, and backing up the system to a external drive is straight forward enough, what are your experiences from increasing the hard drive space and was there any data loss along the way?
What size drive did you upgrade to, what is the best drive to upgrade to?

I used a 250gig some time ago, all went fine no problems or data loss, seems to be loads of reasonable 320gig drives about now, you may as well go for one of them.

whatever you do be careful removing the screws from the hdd housing, they're easily 'threaded'

Make sure that you get a screwdriver that fits right. I did it with the wrong sized one and mangled it a bit. Piece of piss to do though.

What they said - really easy to do - only difficult part is geting the screws out. I even used my 80Gb ipod to back the PS3 up to - then restored it back after the hard drive was changed. No data loss problems at all.
