Well, the weather people predicted snow around 3 o clock and at about half 4 it was snowing heavy. It's now pretty bad and there's a good covering. South Wales is usually pretty snow free (the low bits are anyway) so I imagine if its snowing here the rest of the country must get some at some point.

It snowed in Portsmouth again this morning, not even an inch and my daughters school is closed, ridiculous.

So how bad is it? I've got to catch a flight to London on Sunday, a train to Glasgow on Tuesday and a flight back to sunny Bangkok on Thursday. Is it snow-shoes and huskies time? I'm going to be stuck in some eternal transport hell, aren't I? Free tepid water and cardboard ham sandwiches as compensation.

Basically- is travelling in the UK at the moment impossible and only to be attempted by Sherpas and fools?

Oh dear. Good luck with that mate.

Actually, you might be alright. The forecast is that temperatures will get to about 8 deg C over the next few days, the snow will turn to rain, and apart from the odd flashflood due to meltwater, we should be back to the weather us Brits know and love - grey skies and rain.

That said, when was the forecast every right?

I do hope it thaws soon. My street doesn't get gritted and is on a bit of a slope. The paths are like glass, the road isn't much better, and we haven't seen the bin men in 2 and a half weeks.

My boss's kids school closed because the headmaster couldnt get his car out and didnt want to get the bus!!!!

Stupid ignorant fucker doesnt realise that that one selfish act caused hundreds of adults to lose ANOTHER paid day at work which then affects the businesses and ultimately the economy!

A lot of my guitar students haven't gone back to school after Christmas yet! By my calculations, there's been four days when the schools definetly couldn't open, so god knows why they were closed early this week when it hadn't snowed for five days. Fair enough, a lot of people won't be able to get in, but there's hundreds of kids that walk up my road every day to get to the local school, there's no reason why they couldn't do that in the snow.

I don't have kids myself, but I can imagine it must be tear your hair out frustrating when you have to take another day off out of your holidays or unpaid leave because your kids school is closed.

My partner is essentially a housewife, and while I have often begrudged the lack of second income, at times like this it really helps, as childcare issues don't arise. I just wish she'd put down her DS, get off her fat arse and do some bloody housework.

Scrubchub, what part of Cardiff do you live in where kids walk to school?!? The only kids that don't arrive in cars round my way are the ones whose parents clearly can't afford one.

I'm glad all this damn snow is melting as I've missed two harp lessons already. I'm itching for advice on fingering technique. Oh, and a harp lesson of course.

Considering how it has impacted everyone else's life I think I've got off easily if all it has cost me is a fortnight of continued ineptitude on an instrument no-one listens to anyway.

I live up in Pontprennau, just round the corner from Corpus Christi high school, so a load of kids come from Pontrennau up my road and through the park to get there.
