"How do you know they are old enough?"
"Well if there is grass on the pitch..."
"What if there isn't?"
"Well it's too late by then."

Finished The Corner yesterday. Amazing miniseries. Funny, heart-breaking and totally gripping, I find David Simon to be the most humane writer in television today. There's actors and actresses who'd later appear in The Wire aplenty and fans of that show really have to see it.
Top, top stuff.
Now onto Generation Kill.

Re: The great TV Shows thread! (formerly THE WIRE)
While we're on the subject of Lost (even though there's a dedicated thread for it, but whatever
) I thought the most recent episode, The Variable, was great. We finally have an answer to one of the bigger questions in the series, i.e. (possibly a spoiler, so I'll blank it out) what the purpose of the Swan station was, and why Desmond kept having to push the button. It also helped that it's a pseudo sister episode to my favourite of the entire show, season 4's The Constant, which if you can't remember was the one that Desmond kept jumping between 2004 on the freighter to 1996 when he was in the army and met Daniel at Oxford.
It's definitely getting better as it's going. I genuinely can't believe that there's only 20 episodes before the whole show wraps!
Dexter's been amazing this year too so far, even though we're only like 2 episodes into it

Re: The great TV Shows thread! (formerly THE WIRE)
Sons Of Anarchy recently started on Bravo, by the guy who did the Shield, and is shaping into something interesting. It centres on a motorcycle gang, the previously mentioned Sons Of Anarchy, who in effect run the small town of Charming in California and their relationships (or lack of) with competitors and law enforcement. Oh, and the first series is based around Hamlet. It's got a gritty brutalism, fairly compelling characters and the potential for an involved plot.
One of my favourite lines from the recent In Betweeners series was "Simon didn't know whether to come in his pants or text his friends. So he did both". It gets away with it because the characters are so painfully hopeless and sometimes close to tragic.

Re: The great TV Shows thread! (formerly THE WIRE)
Well, i decided to give The Wire another chance, bought series 1 on dvd. Have to say, i'm glad i did. It took a while for me to 'get' it, after the faster pace of stuff like 24 and The Shield. But once i did, i felt a right idiot for ever doubting this excellent series. Just finished series 3 last night, which so far has been my favourite. Very much looking forward to finding out how series 4 and 5 turn out.
Got the first series of Battlestar Galactica, the new version, never seen it before. Was a bit confused though when i played the first episode, only for a 'previously' bit to cover something before it. Ah well, i'll give it a chance when i get around to it.

I am doubting The Wire as well - my friend told me I have to watch it but at the moment I don't understand what the fuss is about. I am on about episode 9 of the first season. It is an okay show so far but now great. He did tell me it would take some time to get into.
I also object to the episodes being an hour long. That's a bit much for me.

Re: The great TV Shows thread! (formerly THE WIRE)
I did the exact same thing! There's a mini-series that they aired a couple of years before the series got picked up, like a backdoor pilot. It's pretty important, so I'd recommend watching that before you go on. You can get it off Amazon (here) for like a fiver. It's about 3 hours long if memory serves, but is very good.Andy Kurosaki wrote:Got the first series of Battlestar Galactica, the new version, never seen it before. Glad you've joined the Wire fraternity Andy!
The 3hour BSG pilot essentially sets the scene for the attack on humankind and how they've ended up in space with the ragtag fleet of survivors, so it's kind of an essential starting point as Rotek points out.
