These pictures really are composed by some simple techniques hence the speed in which they were done.
There are many other techniques that I have used in these two pictures, for example,
1- the displacement filter requires a displacement map- what is that?
2- how did you create the wavy lines in the first picture? was that a brush you created? and if so:
3- how does one create a new brush preset?
cheers.

Nice. You say you are a Graphic Designer. I'm an artist myself, but I have a degree in Graphic Design. At the moment I am doing a few jobs, some large spray paintings, some mixed media canvases, some band promotional material and some t-shirt designs. All along side a part-time job but I do hope to get enough regular design jobs in so I can leave that one. Do you work for a company? Or are you freelance? Do you get much work?

1. Yes you need a displacement map. Which is basically another picture, in which to displace it with. I used a picture of a splash. But initially I duplicated the layer I wanted to displace before using the filter. This way once the filter had done its work I could carefully rub out parts I didn't need leaving some bits of the image looking crisp while the cap etc. looked like paint splashes.michaelarby wrote:wow- ive learned some new stuff already. cheers. but would you mind sharing a few more secrets with me?

2. I again used Illustrator for this. I drew two wavy lines a bit different from each other, and then I used the blend tool which gave me the option of setting how many lines I wanted in between the two I had created. It then creates a nice uniform blend between lines. You can also have the lines a different colour from each other and the blend will create a transition from one colour to the other as well. It's quite a nice tool.
When taking things from Illustrator to Photoshop now it is best to copy and paste and select pixels as the end result. If you drag and drop now, a vector workgroup is created in photoshop and the appearance is a quite a bit poorer.
3. To create a brush preset you go to the brush editor which is on the toolbar at the top, it's second left of where it says workspace. You have to have brush selected as a tool for this to come up though I think.
You can then create a new brush or edit one that already exists, then at the side drop down menu you can save that brush.
Maybe I should put some images up and you can use them to try out the things like displace etc.
This could become a very interesting thread.

Well, im an Aerospace engineer for my Full time job. But i like to do design as a little side earner.
I mainly do Flyer's and Posters for nightclubs, but have done a few wedding invites, menus, price lists.. and so on.
I probably get 1 job a month which isnt much i know but its a bit of beer money for me.
Id like to get into it, to get more work (website, proper pricing structure and so on) but just don't have the enthusiasm at the moment due to stress at work.
