I don't think it looks that bad to be honest. For a film that is obviously aimed at little 'uns it's not that bad.

Bob, bob, bob...

It's not as baaaad as it could be. But it really doesn't look that good either.

These film makers deserve harsh criticisms. Think of the 80's with all of the great action films that came out of that decade. No real CGI. But real gritty (even if somewhat cheesy) hard line standards. Those directors knew what cool was.

Think Predator. Think Terminator 2. Think Blade Runner.

Now think Transformers, Spiderman and this trailer.

Too much emphasis is placed on CGI.
I'm not against CGI, it's a fantastic tool; and if used right, sparingly and logically it could help people make some really awesome films.
But people just don't have any standards anymore.
They run with crappy stories, plot lines, acting and art styles.

It's just so disappointing, especially more so when the cartoon the film is based off, actually is cool.

Sure the cartoons have their flaws, but they still manage to achieve the right level of awesome. A level so many film makers in Hollywood today just cannot understand.

Oh, and why would they choose to aim the film at the kiddies?
Surely the majority of Dragonball fans are a bit older than kids? The cartoon itself was aimed at older kids...

... It could have been so good. If only they cared.

Well, I enjoyed Transformers, like a lot of people, I also thought the first two Spiderman films were great and the only time I have a real problem with CGI is if it's pops up in horror films since you just don't get the same effect as you do when someone is wrestling with a puppet.

As for why they would aim the film at kids, I have no idea but they clearly have, that's obvious from the trailer.

I uber disagree with this as well. There is no way to take a cartoon with the style of Dragon Ball Z and turn it into a decent live action movie. It is as impossible as eating the moon.

What about Casshern? The fighting in that was Dragonball-esque.

I've got Casshern on DVD, it's awesome. To be honest I still don't know exactly what's going on, but it's still the most beautiful looking film I've ever seen. It would be the reason I ever bought a Blu-ray player (PS3). It makes quite good points about humans as a species too, and it has a lovely looking Asian lady too. All the components that make up an awesome film.

Aye, Casshern was very good. However, I don't just mean the fights, I mean the over the top acting, I mean the 'comedy' if it can be called that, the colourful characters, everything that makes a lot of anime so enjoyable just doesn't work when you put it in live action so you either have to have a really serious film which misses the point of the original completely, or, a really bright, stupid film that makes you cringe for an hour and a half.
Agreed. two words: Sin City
I must confess that I have never read the Sin City comic, does it really have themes similar to Dragon Ball though? It seems highly unlikely I must say.

I take your point, though I don't think it's entirely impossible. Mind you I'm sure that this film would make me cringe if I was to see it anyway, so I'd prefer if they tried to be faithful and cringe-worthy over what we do have.

It doesn't really have any similar themes. Though it's an example of a movie faithfully representing the comic. It's practically the same. Though it doesn't mean that it's a great film. I can't see any other link between the mentioning of this and Dragonball other than this really.

Casshern was TOSS!!!!

what a fucking mess. it's art direction was pretty cool, trying to mix the anime with the live action, but as entertainment it was terrible. i think i fell asleep three times, on three sepereate ocassions trying to watch it.
