Not bad. You got SMD's new album? I think it's really good at the start, but tails off a bit towards the end. Whereas 65dos just lost it with The Destruction of Small Ideas.
Let's go to the mall!

Just got GYBE's double disc album yesterday,Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven. Very good, but total headphones on and in your house kinda music, not walking around a shity town called Paisley listening to it on your MP3 kinda music.
Mogwai are just the best in that genre of music. Glasgow Megasnake has to be one of the best tracks in the whole history of music.
Haha, M83 have some great moments. Teen Angst is an absolutely amazing piece of music. Some of the stuff on the latest album is a bit crappy, but they make up for it with their shining moments. I've never listen to Efterklang, but I quite enjoy a bit of GYBE as well, although Lift Yer Skinny Fists is the only album of theirs I have. As you say its music best suited to lying down with headphones on.

I have SMD's album but haven't given it much of a thorough listen yet. All I know is that the first track "Sleep Deprivation" is brilliant. And I disagree about 65dos; whilst Small Ideas isn't as good as Fall of Math or One Time For All Time, I still think it is an excellent album. The main problem I have with it though is the recording techique. I know what they were trying to do by avoiding clipping and distortion that so many new albums have, but even turned up loud the album still sounds very flat, especially the drums. Other than that though, I think the music on it is great.

We talked to Joe Fro before their last gig here about DOSI and he agreed that it sounded quite flat overall. He promised us that it'd sound a hell of a lot better live. He wasn't wrong either. They're one of the few bands who can exceed album quality live on a regular basis.

Godspeed are amazing as well, but I think they take it a little too far sometimes. I'm sorry but I don't really want to listen to a ten minute track where someone recites poetry with ambient music backing them. LYSFLA is a fantastic album though.

I wouldn't say Mogwai are the best at what they do either. They're very hit-and-miss, I think. I got my first chance to see when I was 16. A few members of the crowd were talking and some shouted but that's to be expected in a bar and Mogwai huffed about it. They said, and I quote: "we'd rather play a nuclear blast site than Belfast again." Needless to say they played again about two or three years later. I understand where they're coming from, but it just comes off as pretentious. I've heard far, far worse crowds than those that were there that night.

I'm glad he agrees it sounds flat, a lot of people gave me flack about complaining as they said it was just because it wasn't overly clipping and distorted and that my sound system was inadequate  I get what you're saying about Mogwai as well, they have a very arrogant pretenious attitude about them. I wouldn't say they are the best of that genre either, but they were certainly very influential on a lot of the new bands of the "post-rock" genre. Pelican deserve a shout as well.

Yup have to agree with you about Mogwai live, you can't do much at their gig except stand and be impressed. When I saw them last year during one of their many 8 minute songs, well one of the ones that go loud for the first 3 minutes/ quiet for 2 minutes/ then loud for the last 3. I totaly zoned out for the 2 minutes of quiet, might have had something to do with the 8 pints of cider, but when the loudness kicked back in I totaly shat my pants

Yeah Pelican are ace on CD, saw them earlier this year and wasn't to impressed with them. Untitled off of The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw is brilliant :D

You should check out Efterklang
heres a vid :P

From the single I've heard with all the weird arm dancing, I really like them! Yeah, Battles album is just the most complex amazing thing I've heard in a long time. Can't wait for the new Interpol album, trying very hard to resist downloading it but I want to wait and appreciate it. You really should give Of Montreal a listen, their new album "Hissing Fauna You Are The Destroyer" is just crazy, blissful indie pop.

And yeah, Deftones rule, the new album has a tune called Rats Rats Rats which has possibly the coolest guitar breakdown I've ever heard in the middle :)

Sorry for double posting but it's separate from the previous one :)

I think Burkey and Switch and I need to get together and listen/talk about music. I love M83, agree that they can have their duff moments, but Teenage Angst is an awesome tune. Glad to see someone who likes Album Leaf, their song with Sigur Ros "Streamside" is possibly the most beautiful modern day song I've ever heard. And Mew are one of the most underrated bands around, Frengers and Glass Handed Kites are awesome.

And Burkey, your taste in music has a distinct drownedinsound feel to it, are you a regular visitor???

Are we talking bands or genres? I'm going to get moaned at for this but i really don't care. I listen to anything and everything, and if i like it, i like it, if i don't, i don't. Simple as.

My main love has to be good old Sleazy Rock N Roll -- Hardcore Superstar, Buckcherry, Velvet Revolver, Motley Crue, Guns N Roses, Backyard Babies, etc. I listen to alot of Heavy Rock and Metal, but anything heavier than Metal doesn't appeal to me, Thrash? Black? Death? Forget about it. Other bands like NIN, Filter, Stone Temple Pilots, A Perfect Circle, Static-X and few more i can't remember at the minute have to get an honourable mention too.

I know that doesn't cover the "anything and everything" statement i made earlier but bare with me. At work we have the radio on, bare in mind i work with a bunch of middle aged women so Kerrang Radio's out of the question, so we have a lot of pop music on. Be it dance, RnB, Hip Hop or good old fashioned pop. This is where i hear artisits like Lily Allen, Sugar Babes, a multitude of Indie bands with stupidly catchy riffs and hooks, you get the picture. Granted, i don't like all of it, but if it has a good beat and decent vocals i'm happy.

To summerise -- My favourite band at the minute is Hardcore Superstar, my favourite Male artist is Justin Timberlake.

If you only listen to one genre (and it's endless sub-genres) you are isolating yourself from a whole universe of music. But at the end of the day, this is only my opinion.

Or we could just be in each other group for the next CD swap. :P
Yes yes I know, to every-one in my present group I'm getting meu to burn the 3rd CD so I can send them all at once because my Mac still says it can't burn anything

I've never heard of Album Leaf, must check them out if they have worked with Sigur Rós. Have you got the track Sigur did with Mogwai called Luvstory, it was on LmtdEdt 7", quite good, but it's more Sigur than MYT. I've also got the Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson & Sigur Rós album, Angels of the Universe, worth checking out.

I saw Mew supporting a guy called Martin Grech bloody years back when he played King Tut's, before Grech turmed into some sort of Goth Metal act. I think car adverts have that effect on bands :?

Race Out has to be one of the best headphone tracks of all time, especialy at the 1.36min mark when the left/right/left/right guitar bit kicks in. I tried listening to Helmet and Tomahawk when I found out about the connection :? wasn't too impressed, but I do like the Helmet track on Guitar Hero 2, soooooo much fun to play :D
Also, all Battles fans should check out Don Caballero, one of the drummer's old bands

And also, here's a whole live Battles gig off of YouTube, 1hr long :D

Yeah, 65 are genuine guys really. They're very honest but sometimes a little on the naive side. I mean, I actually offered them to become an Irish street team member and they didn't know what a street team was...

That's my problem with Mogwai, they're just a little too stuck up themselves. Don't get me wrong, they're a great band and probably the first band to get me listening to that sort of music (Christmas Steps all the way) but there are arguably better bands out there not getting the same amount of recognition. Pelican are a good example of this. I've only been getting into them recently but they're fantastic. Though its not exactly the same sorta music, Blonde Redhead are excellent, yet few people I talk to seem to have heard of them.
Also, all Battles fans should check out Don Caballero, one of the drummer's old bands
This man speaks the truth. Don Caballero are fucking incredible.

Yup, an ever so ace band. I've only got Misery Is A Butterfly, but what an album all the same. What I have heard of the new album sounds promising also. Clinic are great band along the lines of Blonde Redheads style.
I was told to check out OOIOO because I'm into Battles, wasn't too impressed.
Some bands in the genre can be total wank though, Animal Collective for an example, yeah some good songs, but mostly wank. Isis also bore me to death.
Fans of the Don Caballero should also check out Trans Am, especialy the album The Surveillance. Very very good.

Nope. I tend not to rely on reviews for music as I generally disagree with them. Personally I'm not very good at discussing the merits of music, I just know what I like. I do use the "After The Post Rock" forums now and then to check for recommendations, also they have a good download section. I also use Last.fm quite a bit to check for recommendations or the "sounds like" feature. They also usually have a good few tracks available for previewing.

Finally some one with taste simlar to mine, Sleaze metal reign supreme in my book.
Though I border the other side of metal to hard, fast and aggressive its all good.

Though I do tend to listen to a bit of darker classical music, not really sure what im listning to but compsers like bach, Wagner etc, suppose I have Final Fantasy sound tracks to thank for that.

Hey Switch i noticed that a lot of your bands are of the Indie Rock genre which is what i like but i'm not to clued up on the whole scene, i particularly only know of the well known bands but i also know that they are not always the best. Can you guys give me some suggestions of the best not so known bands from the genre? I have stuff from Maximo Park, Good Shoes and Bloc Party as such. I don't know whether any of those are your cup of tea but with some suggestions of yours i could maybe then check them out?
