Amazon's Treasure Truck.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/b?ie=UTF8&node=14210034031

You sign up for it and order an item and you go up to this truck which is driving around the country and pick up your item. Truck delivers one item per day.

What?

I'm so out of touch what is the need being fulfilled here.

Is it a thing to capitalise on the anxiety to spend that people have? You don't really need this thing, but hey look if you order it you can get it from a fun truck which might be driven by Darth Vader. Maybe.

It's the next step after those surprise boxes you can buy at various retailers which usually have random content with a certain theme.

Amazon have just reinvented the mobile shop ?!?!

Are they going to run a mobile butchers & chip van anytime soon ?

"Alexa, get me fish chips and peas twice"

"Your order has been accepted and the chip van will arrive in 1 hr. People who order chips also order salt, vinegar and ketchup, should I add that to your order?"

Or maybe the future will be skewed because of the government drive towards tackling obesity

" You ordered chips already this week, Alexa suggests a gym ball instead"

Is technology actually making people more stupid, or is it just enabling people to be stupid in ways they couldn’t of been before because the technology didn’t exist?

I saw a guy basically walk in to a door today because he had headphones on while looking at he’s phone. Like, how sensory deprived do you need to make your self?

Stephen Hawkins answer to a question on a reddit ama a few years back

https://np.reddit.com/r/science/comment ... s/cvsdmkv/
I'm rather late to the question-asking party, but I'll ask anyway and hope. Have you thought about the possibility of technological unemployment, where we develop automated processes that ultimately cause large unemployment by performing jobs faster and/or cheaper than people can perform them? Some compare this thought to the thoughts of the Luddites, whose revolt was caused in part by perceived technological unemployment over 100 years ago. In particular, do you foresee a world where people work less because so much work is automated? Do you think people will always either find work or manufacture more work to be done? Thank you for your time and your contributions. I’ve found research to be a largely social endeavor, and you've been an inspiration to so many.

Answer:

If machines produce everything we need, the outcome will depend on how things are distributed. Everyone can enjoy a life of luxurious leisure if the machine-produced wealth is shared, or most people can end up miserably poor if the machine-owners successfully lobby against wealth redistribution. So far, the trend seems to be toward the second option, with technology driving ever-increasing inequality.
Scary :(

Not the kind of problem solved by building big, beautiful walls

In 2009 Stephen Hawking held a party for time travellers.

He sent the invites out after the party, and was disappointed that nobody had turned up. He had even provided ten bottles of vintage champagne for any time travellers that turned up...
