Better than I expected!
What made me laugh is how Brooker said that you shouldn't analysis it, just enjoy it as a good ol' romp, yet he's the guy prepared to anally analysis every programme he sets eyes on! I also thought the Big Brother 'Northern Guy' wouldn't have said "they're coming to get you, Barbara!" in reference to Night of the Living Dead - as if he's seen it! Totally out of character. Nitpicking aside, it's surprisingly good.[/b]

I re-watched the original Romero Day of the Dead some weeks back and those slow lumbering zombies, in particular on the streets at the start and inside the bunker at the end, still had an excellent scare factor. I think part of the fear is knowing that they are slowly making their way towards you. I mean a quick death is one thing, but having it slowly creep up to bite you in the ass is another.
Saying that, the Dead Set zombies still bring their own scares to the table, and they seem to be a decent mix of the old Romero themes with the new infected (from the 28 Days/Weeks films) traits. What made me miss the Romero zombies though was that these new zombies (Neo Zombies?) don’t seem to have as much emotional pull as their predecessors. I mean you’d sometimes end up feeling sorry for some of the Romero lot, seeing them stand there staring into oblivion or, for the ones without functioning bodies, knowing that they were stuck in that one spot until someone comes along to kill them. Perhaps that is just me but it was a big part of their appeal.
The new zombies (and I put the ones from the Dawn of the Dead remake into this boat too) have yet to reach that stage yet but then again its still early days for them. I’d love to see Romero make a film with these new zombies, if anyone can make you feel sympathy towards an old dead person who wants to eat your intestines then its him. At the moment the new zombies just come across as being wild creatures, scary yes, but not in the same way as before.
Still, a regular zombie television series would be awesome, perhaps Dead Set is testing the waters? .

So now the series has run its course, what did you think?
spoilers
That scottish woman was far more interesting as a zombie than as an annoying contestant.
I knew that idiot producer would end up fucking it up for everyone. Could see it coming a mile off. It was still nice when the zombies got him, lovely Day of the Dead homage.
Shame the lead character copped it in the end. I was hoping for a slightly less nihilistic ending. It was still good though.
The Big Brother setting was genius. That it broadcasted the horror 24 hours a day was very good, and the scene at the end with the zombies watching the lead characters zombified face on the telly was pretty cool.
My partner thought I was going to bang on about the significance of a decadent society exemplified by Big Brother brought to its knees so easily by the zombie plague, and made sarcastic remarks to that end. However, that hadn't occurred to me. I was still reeling from all the incredibly well done blood and gore. I still have a vivid memory of the spike going through Davina's eye socket.
So yeah, overall a very welcome zombie experience on our screens. And to think, 25 years ago it would have been considered an extreme video nasty. Now it's on a popular TV channel. Hurrah for libertarian telly!
