The Rock/Double Jeopardy screenwriters Douglas Cook and David Weisberg are attached to write a a big screen adaptation of the first-person shooter time-travel war video game Darkest of Days. Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland, Knight & Day) is producing and CAA is currently shopping the project to the hollywood studios.

The game, developed by 8monkey Labs and published by Phantom EFX in September 2009 for the X Box 360 [in the US], takes the player back in time into historic battles in an effort to save key individuals from certain death in order to save the continuity of history. For example, according to Wiki, “the battles range from Custer’s Last Stand at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876 to fighting in Pompeii as ash and fire rain down from an erupting Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD.”

That concept sounds like it could be really impressive as a game, but I'm not sure if it would be as successful as a film. Then again, I never got to play the game so I can't guess how it would convert to cinema.

That's such a shame. The whole idea of going back through time to such significant events is just... my imagination makes me think that it should have been one of the best FPS games ever made.

i thought that too, i heard of it mentioned in a games mag like a year before and that really peaked interest, but seeing it, it was just like, bad. invisible walls, not clear on direction, looked poor, you could kill every one as long as you was ducking because the enemy couldn't shoot downwards. was really bad. i agree the premise sounds really cool, though. i maybe wrong but i think it was made by a russian company.

i wonder why people mostly choose bad games to make films of?

The "Mortal Kombat" movie franchise is in legal limbo after a breach-of-contract lawsuit was filed against Warner Bros., which reportedly is developing a third film based on the once wildly popular video game.

Threshold Entertainment Inc. filed the action Tuesday in Los Angeles, claiming Warners had shut it out of production of the martial arts movie, in which it owns a licensing interest.

In the early 1990s, Threshold had entered into a partnership with arcade-game developer Midway to develop "Mortal Kombat" into a variety of media, including two feature films.

The lawsuit states that Threshold and Midway entered into an additional contract in 2006 to develop a third "Kombat" movie, including script development and pre-production.

But Midway filed for bankruptcy last February, and Warners successfully bid on its properties. Threshold says a federal bankruptcy court upheld its interests and licenses as a part of the sale.

The lawsuit states that Warners has "failed to work with Threshold in the development and production of the third 'Mortal Kombat' film," and has avoided communication with the Connecticut-based company, which has offices in Santa Monica. In late January, reports surfaced that a "Mortal Kombat" reboot by Warners was under way, including the hiring of a new screenwriter.

Atari, which has been increasing its efforts to mine its video game library in Hollywood, has tapped Missile Command as a property ripe for a theatrical film.

The company is in active discussions with studios to acquire the title for development, with Fox and Peter Chernin's new production company the likely venue at which the property will end up.

There are traces of science-fiction elements to the game (the story is putatively set in another galaxy) as well as military overtones. And the film would likely be shot in 3D, tapping into the current vogue. But how a studio could turn Missile Command into a full-fledged action movie remains a question.

Dante’s inferno is making the most of its fifteen minutes with an anime, comic and even an Electronic Arts-branded edition of the eponymous literary classic, but a live action movie it will never be, according to executive producer and creative director Jonathan Knight.

“Our version of Dante is a dark, troubled character. At the beginning of the game, he’s fairly unlikeable. He’s done a lot of bad things [and] there’s a lot about him to not like for sure. I think that’s something you could only do in a game,” mused Knight as we wrapped up our roundtable interview. “If our Dante was up on the big screen in a movie exactly as he is in the game, I’m not sure you would make that journey with him.”

Looks like David Cage's wet dream of working in movies may finally have come true. New Line Cinema has optioned Heavy Rain for film, meaning that we may very well get a movie version of a glorified movie in the very near future.

Anyway, it's just a filing right now, so we don't know if it will actually lead to a movie.
