DNS woes

Was wondering if anyone could help me - my internet has basically become unusable - both wired and wireless connections drop on pc and games consoles, it seems to kick anything off every 2 - 5 minutes (pc network leaves local access only).

I'm with talk talk, and have tried everything - i've even reset the router and reconfigured it as per the settings on talk talks website - i've spen hours on google trying to find a solution but nothing works. I can't even register on the talk talk forum because the account number/telephone number combo i have isn't correct, despite it being on all phone bills.

When disconnected - the xbox tells me there is a problem resolving the DNS, which is what the computers around the house say aswell - however - 20 seconds later it will work. The routers configured to assign DNS automatically - and all devices are set to the same. I've tried assigning the default DNS from talk talk (primary 192.168.1.1 secondary 192.168.2.10) and it still kicks me off.

I've tried uPnP(?) settings both on and off and i've opened port 3074 for the xbox (which is set to a static ip of 192.168.1.50).

Any suggestions would be welcome - i'm slowly losing my mind. All i want to do now is smash stuff with a lump hammer.

The routers a Huawei 520 by the way.

Has that router got 5 coloured lights on the front?, if so is the right hand light on.... i had this problem too and had to enable something in the router to get a stable connection. Sorry i cant be more help but i'm a noob at computer stuff and had to be walked through it by someone at Talk Talk cutomer services.... After about 60 complaints about my connection. :)

Yeah I was about to say I doubt its your DNS

DNS only plays an issue when your trying to find the IP for a service, so if you can get online once, then its not the DNS. However it might be a dodgy router - I've never heard of that make... know anyone with a spare router you could borrow to try out?

Think (touch wood) i got it sorted. After losing patience with talk talk, i phoned a friend who used to work with bt - he suggested running a new phone line direct from the master socket to the router, which so far has worked fine. I've streamed i player for an hour and had 5 games of battlefield 2 with no drop outs!
