A Glitch in the System

"This game is broken", 'This game is unplayable", 'Why did Ubisoft even release this?," are probably some of the things you've heard about Assassin's Creed: Unity (AC:U) over the past 10 days since release. So, let's address these issues head on first and foremost. In my 55 hours of play I experienced minor glitches such as: Arno's foot glitching on a surface whilst running/climbing and teleporting down a building when using the "Parkour Down" command, NPC's changing clothing and clipping as you run past as well as framerate drops in areas with a large number of NPCs (in front of Notre Dame Cathedral for example), I also experienced one occurance of an NPC skating through the Paris environs and a handful of occurances of objects floating in the air when they shouldn't be as well as not being able to access the co-op side of the game until after the 3rd patch was released by Ubisoft.

I found none of these glitches or framerate problems to be of detriment to me enjoying the game, and none of them rendered the game "unplayable" at all. They are regular glitches you encounter with any open-world game, particularly one as ambitious as this one, Dark Souls, Fallout 3, Skyrim on PS3 all have had similar levels of issues in the past, but the games were so good in those instances that the critics and general gaming public overlooked their surface-level weaknesses and saw how good the game was deep below the surface.

Phew, now that that's out the way let's get down to actually talking about AC:U's plus points, shall we? The Assassin's Creed games (particularly AC3) have often had a problem giving you too many prologues or making the prologues unncessarily long, AC:U is much, MUCH better than previous games in the series. The game starts you off as Protagonist, Arno Dorian, as a young boy in Versailles, on the day his Father get murdered, this sequence also introduces you to Arno's love interest, Élise de la Serre, who plays a pretty key role in the game. You then fast-forward a few years later to the night of Élise's initiation into the Templar order at 16, Arno being Arno and AC being AC, you have to sneak into the party and find Élise. Élise's father, Grand Master de la Serre, gets murdered at this party which sets the entire series of events of AC:U into place and leads Arno to Paris on his quest for redemption.

The story, for the most part is pretty unremarkable, you've got all the standard AC mission types in there, but luckily there's hardly any of the god-awful tailing missions repeated featured throughout the series' history. Ubisoft Montréal also introduce what they call 'Blackbox' missions which are essentially Hitman-style Assassination missions that happen roughly once per Sequence. These 'Blackbox' missions task you with assassinating your target however you see fit, you can just go in through the front door, you can find a locked window somewhere which you can lockpick open and get in that way, or you can try and stealthily take out every guard between you and your target until you eventually succeed in your mission. In addition to this the game usually provides you with a Distraction or Assistance Opportunity and a Hitman-style special assassination which you can trigger by reaching a certain point on the map, for example, the first 'Blackbox' mission has you sitting in a Confession booth in Notre Dame, waiting for your target to sit in the other booth, and when he does so a button prompt comes up and you stab your knife in his throat, it's an extremely satisfying conclusion to the mission and something I've not quite experience in an AC game before.

The story meanders its way through Revolutionary Paris, having you rub shoulders with historical figures such as Maximillien de Robespierre and Napoleon Bonaparte (as AC2 had you rub shoulders with Leonardo di Vinci) but never involving you directly in the Revolution itself, merely using the Revolution expertly as a back-drop for all the games twists and turns (a far cry from throwing Tea into Boston Harbour in AC3), it is somewhat unsatisfying and uninspiring at times but the missions are relatively varied in AC:U and the 'Rift' Missions a nice change of pace from time to time. I never felt myself getting tired or bored of the proceedings like I did in AC3 and AC4's story's at times, the conclusion is extremely confusing and unsatisfying in itself and the last mission and 'boss-fight' (yes you read that correctly) are hilariously out of place but the story in itself is the best since AC:Brotherhood.

What kept me involved the most though, and what kept me grinning like a cheshire cat for the majority of the game is Paris itself. The graphics are absolutely phenomenal (some of the opening party scenes at Versailles and the first time you see Notre Dame up close are absolutely staggering), the lighting is absolutely incredible and the art design, capturing the mood, atmosphere and spirit of Paris itself is absolutely incredible, combine this with an improved musical score from recent games and you have a perfect virtual city to just exist in, some of the best moments in the game was me just running about collecting chest after chest in different districts, none of the districts feel the same, they all feel unique and they all feel incredibly varied, from the blue rooftops of Ile de la Cité to the dank, wooden structures of La Biévre, and the fields of Les Invalidés, the art design and Paris itself is staggeringly beautiful.

In conclusion, Assassin's Creed: Unity is a game I can highly recommend, forget all the negativity surrounding the game as of late, if you've enjoyed the AC series before, or any open-world game for that matter, you'll love AC:U. Virtual Paris is just an incredible place to exist in and explore all its different nooks and crannies, it may have a few technical problems but these just fade into the background as you're running on some rooftops, or listening to groups of people sing the La Marseillaise as you're walking down the street, AC:U's virtual Paris is an incredible place to just exist in and soak up the atmosphere, and that's all that matters.

8/10

Was a freebie a while back, and a decent fun wee game. It gets pretty frustrating in places, as the whole mechanic revolves around dying but the dying part is still somehow annoying! Some of the tighter time limits towards the end caused some teeth to grind, but you have to applaud the idea, it's a great and original core mechanic. Passing a mission feels great too and the Meatboy-style replays are a hoot. Enjoyed it, not enough to go back and perfect the levels (I'll be walking away from it to save my sanity) but I did certainly enjoy it. Good freebie.

Was quite enjoying this at first - the combat isn't terrible and it had some fun ideas. The ideas run out, the joke gets old and the combat wears long before the end credits though so many times during the last few lazy turgid hours I considered ditching it. Not a classic.

    those bas###ds, that was the second saddest game moment I've ever had    .

Brothers : a tale of two sons.

First mention has to go to the control system which I struggled with throughout, each stick controls one character which combined with a rather slow camera often led to minor frustration as I got my wires crossed sending one brother the wrong way time and time again.

As for the gameplay, its puzzle based with a smattering of timed coordination required the two especially in a later section that involved rope swinging.

Didn't struggle with any of the puzzles at all, which was a little disappointing I would have liked a bit more of a challenge.

Graphically I did feel I was back on the PS2 at times but it did the job happily, music was nothing impressive, though the sound effects where solid throughout.

Overall aside from the gut retching 5th act this was playable and reasonably fun : 6/10.

Worth 3hours if you see it dirt cheap.

I might need to play Brothers again at some point. It just really didn't do it for me in that way at all.maybe I wasn't in the right head space or something.

This is great, gutted that it sounds like it's been canned, especially with the last of the initial episodes ending on a cliffhanger that suggests it was all about to go even more mental. Really fun, solid Kinect controls, art style is lovely and there are some real laughs, sometimes from the ludicrous things it makes you do with Kinect (I have friends who played this with a controller and I really think they missed out on the full experience). Only complaint from me is the one character whose vocal delivery is painfully...painfully...excruciatingly...slow. Made every conversation with him a real chore and made me just avoid a lot of conversation options with him which goes against my usual game urges!

Winter Is Coming

Being a huge Game of Thrones fan, when I heard Telltale Games (one of my favourite game developers) were making a video game adaption with choices, consequences and emotional impact in a similar mould to their popular The Walking Dead series I was beyond excited, I love the way Telltale make games, I love the narrative focus, I love the tough decisions you often have to make, I love getting acquainted with all the new characters in a series and I love the emotional impact, the first time I heard the TV shows theme tune in the game, implemented and adapted into Telltales engine, it gave me goosebumps, an amazing sight for any gamer and Game of Thrones fan.

You really do need to be a fan of the popular HBO television series of the same name to enjoy the game really as it makes a ton of references to the shows that you won't understand if you haven't watched the series, the game starts off at the end of Season 3, during the Red Wedding and goes on into Season 4 and 5 so I'd recommend watching all episodes of the HBO TV series up to this point to get a full picture of what is going on in the game world at that time and what certain plot-points are referring to.

You start off playing as Gared Tuttle (Squire to Lord Forrester, of House Forrester) just before the Red Wedding takes place, in the encampment containing the men loyal to the Starks, things obviously go awry and the action kicks off from there. You make a few decisions here and the game meanders a narrative path that leads you back to Ironrath, the seat of House Forrester, deep in the Ironwoods.

You're then introduced to the second protagonist, Lord Ethan Forrester and you get to make a series of decisions that affects the Forresters' standing in a post-Red Wedding world and also prepare for the visit of Ramsay Snow, Lord Boltons bastard son.

The game then introduces the third Protagonist, Mira Forrester, who is a Handmaiden to Lady Margaery in King's Landing. It is here that you mix it up with Queen Cersei, Tyrion Lannister and Lady Margaery herself, very cool seeing them all in game form, within the Telltale engine itself.

Overrall, the episode merely acts as a prologue for the series of events that is yet to come introducing you to some of the key characters and some of the Protagonists you'll be making decisions with throughout the course of the 6 episodes of Season 1. It is a very impressive start, with some pretty tough decisions already having to be made and some emotional resonance already fulfilled.

A must-buy for any GoT or Telltale fan.

Enjoyed this way more than the first game. The same problems still pop up (weird checkpointing, bad level design and signposting, stilted scripted events) but much less often and the story is full of bombast and epic set-pieces. The whole down to earth and then jumping and bla bla bla it's just epic. The switching between characters chapter by chapter is a nice touch too, although it does disjoint things a little (I'd sometimes forget who I was playing as until I died and saw my body, and be a bit 'oh that's not Master Chief'). Big improvement on the first game, and the remaster job is tremendous. The cutscenes are possibly the best looking CG cutscenes I've seen in a game.

Game of Thrones Ep1 4/5

Was feeling a bit of Telltale burnout towards the end of TWD season 2 so almost didn't pick this up, but it is GoT so couldn't resist for long. It's great, if necessarily slow as it sets things up for the season. It's very much the Telltale formula, but it's so well suited to the license that it doesn't matter, and there are some really good shock moments just in this opener. Should be a good season! Also, it's nice they've added back in the option to switch off those annoying 'Thingy will remember this' and 'You have upset Whatstheirname' notifications. I think giving you a notification everytime one of those flags is checked just exposes the workings of the script too much and pulls you right out of it, and I couldn't seem to find the option in TWAU.

Thought this was an alright chunk of DLC. The missions were enjoyable and the lead character is more interesting than the guy we spent the whole main campaign with. What there is of the story is also more interesting, and there's some nice art direction here and there. Seems to be plenty to do outside the story too but haven't had time to dig into that really.

Halo 2 - XB1 (Normal difficulty) 3/5
Game of Thrones Ep1 4/5

Halo 3 - XB1 (Normal difficulty) 4/5

Never liked Halo back in the day, but on this replay I'm really getting into it. The first two are still really flawed, but it's interesting to see how Bungie's level design and scripting improves over the course of the 3 games. This is definitely far and away the best of the 3 campaigns, it very rarely slips into the problems of the previous games' problems, the set-pieces are huge, the sci-fi space opera melodrama of the whole thing is huge, fantastic score, well paced...just a huge improvement for the series and oozes confidence and refinement in a way the previous entries didn't. The Flood still aren't fun to fight at all so those annoyances still creep in at times, it's a shame their story shackled them to that enemy for 3 games because they really are a drudge to deal with.

Other than that I don't really have any complaints about this and would now happily call myself a Halo fan.

Beguiling and Beautiful

I'd been looking forward to playing this for some time after the rave reviews it got from users and critics alike but I have to say I was left somewhat disappointed by TVoEC.

The game is very up-front in telling you there will be no hand holding at all right at the start of the game and that much is definitely true, I didn't see one hint, tip, quest marker or anything one would consider remotely hand-holdy and this definitely works to the games advantage, TVoEC is definitely the kind of game you want to get immersed in and soak up the gorgeous vistas and the lush landscapes The Astronauts have created.

The 'gameplay' itself (in the rawest sense of the word) can be found in the games murder mystery sections, usually you'll find a body or an object relating to a murder and 'inspect' will come up on the screen, you click the Action button and a variety of words spew out of the screen which echoes what the Protagonist is thinking the object/body relates to and what purpose it served, once you have found all applicable items for a specific murder an audio cue will ring out which means you can go back to the body and hold the action button in order to utilise the Protagonists 'sixth sense' if you like, this enables you to see what happened at the murder seen in 5-6 stages of intensity, once you have been round to each spot that has been revealed you'll then have put each of the scenes in the correct order that you think the murder took place in, once you've placed them in an order you think the murder happened in you click 'visualise' and a scene will play out if you got the order correct, or the scene will fail to load if you have the chronology wrong, you'll then have to go back and re-jig the scenes and eventually get the correct order after a few tries.

It's a good gameplay mechanic, and is genuinely intriguing. These murder mystery set-pieces are repeated 5-10 times throughout the game and are interspersed with other puzzles that I won't spoil, as they're genuinely surprising and worth finding out for yourself. Once you have found all the areas of interest on the map, the game will initiate the end-game and that'll be it.

I was impressed with the game, but it didn't quite live upto the hype in my opinion. The atmosphere had an eerie, mysterious, intriguing nature to it but I didn't feel as if it was as immersive as I imagined it would be, I also kept getting pulled out of the game by the numerous invisible walls dotted around the map, I'd be wandering around a beach or small cliff area and then suddenly an invisible wall would hit me and I'd be unable to proceed, it just kept drawing me out of the game which was a shame, only a minor issue though.

The other minus point for me would be the story itself, unfortunately, I just didn't really find it that interesting and the climax was ultimately anti-climactic and didn't really answer many of the questions I had about the game, the game world and the story itself, it was just a bit nonsensical for my liking.

The good points far outweigh the bad points though, and TVoEC is definitely worth picking up, the game world is absolutely staggeringly beautiful, the atmosphere is eerie, oppressive, mysterious and intriuging and the gameplay is something you wouldn't of experienced before.

A staggeringly beautiful, somewhat flawed, mysterious, first-person exploration mystery adventure, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Ladies and Gentlemen.

REMEMBER ME.

 8) WOW what an ending, absolutely stunning final boss fight (though a little easy I thought).

Overall I loved the depth of the world created in the game...

Even had some natty little 3d models to peruse...

Music was solid and the graphics and lighting where more than adequate for the job of creating a game world.

The gameplay was a mix of simplistic platforming and an at times frustrating beat-em-up.

:| now at this point I will put my hands up and admit that the last beat-em-up I mastered was Soul Caliber on the PS1, and before that SF2 on the SNES so the genre in general isn't really a comfort zone for me.

Did I enjoy the game...yes...was it frustrating at times...yes, but overall it was worth my time to play.

As for a final score I think a 7/10 is generous given my issues with the combat, but it earned it for a well developed and presented game world.
