Bioshock Infinite: Burial at Sea (Part 1) (PS3)

I've not bothered with a rating cos to be honest I just don't know what it should be. If I was giving buyers advice I would say it is absolutely not to be missed if you loved Infinite like me, but you should probably wait for a sale as it is so pityfully short.

It really is utterly fantastic. It's just dripping with atmosphere, and it just has everything that makes Bioshock so amazing. Great characters, Dialogue, environments, artstyle and story. The ending is absolutely brilliant and blows you off your chair just like th full game did. I just wish it hadn't come so soon. It didn't even last 3 hours for me and I really took in the atmosphere and took my time with it. I didn't find all of the audio diaries, but I did find most of them. I don't reckon anyone could get much more than 3 hours out of it even if they absolutely rinsed it. So yeah, wait for a sale.

I didn't really complete this but sat with my lad and helped at certain points. For kids I'd highly recommend it as he loved it and really enjoyed everything from the voice commands to the magic gestures, cleaning and manouvering the book and the mini games. I don't really like motion controlled games but when they're built from scratch for the it they do work pretty well to be fair. The graphics are pretty basic but they do work and fit the Potter universe nicely. Its quite short but I don't think that matters with kids as they'll happily play through the same thing over and over.

Maybe worth a purchase if you're a massive Potter fan or have children who love the universe or are just getting into gaming. Onto Diggs Nightcrawler next which I'm really looking forward to.

That's a great example of how to do dlc I think.

You're banging the games out at the moment, mate. Getting rid of the pile before next gen?

Yeh it's a proper exapansion and something different rather than just a few more missions in the same world. There should be more DLC like that.

I don't think I can get through my entire backlog before next gen arrives, but I've made a promise to myself that I will try get rid of as much DLC and PS plus games as possible before I get the PS4. I have like Mass Effect 3: Omega, Skyrim:Dawnguard and Fallout: Honest Hearts all there unplayed which is really stupid! Its a case of that I loved the other DLCs for those games and so bought them as well but then went onto something else first.

Its been nice blasting through a load of really short games and DLCs after playing Assassins Creed 3 and GTA 5 back to back.

This was alright. Dead short, but alright. You're not missing anything important if you don't play it, but Arias a great character so it was worth it.

It's nowhere near as good as Citadel, but still worth a blast.

18/11/13 - Remember Me - 6.5/10

The story seemed dull at first but it picked up further in and actually ended really good. The twist wasn't a shocking moment and I think most people will see that coming a mile off. Visually I thought it was quite nice throughout. The character models all seem quite detailed and the levels are all really nice, even if they are just corridors. The combat is pretty simple with four different combos but its the way you can adjust these to give you different perks that makes them pretty good. You can either adjust them to replenish health, deal more damage or cut the timer down on your specials. Its up to you and you can add a link in there which doubles or triples the outcome depending on where you position it. My only gripe with the combat is that they went for the Batman style but totally ballsed up the dodge. It works but sometimes it doesn't feel responsive enough and you end up getting hit which breaks your combo and when your fighting 6-10 enemies it does frustrate at times.

The platforming is pretty simple with you just pointing in the right direction, which annoyingly is always signposted. You can venture in certain parts for collectables but its never testing, just time consuming if anything. The remixes are a clever idea with you changing people memories to help you progress at certain points, shame there's only four of them but you can do various mixes in each of them.

One issue I did have was that on 5 or 6 occasions the game wouldn't let me progress and I had to go back to the main menu and start from the last checkpoint again. The one time it was a really tough fight and I was playing on hard, I completed it twice and had to reset both times. In the end I just dropped it down to normal as I was sick of restarting, i think that has affected my final score because I was on the final chapter when it happened so it pissed me off quite a lot.

It was a hard one to score because it doesn't do anything amazing but it doesn't do anything terrible either, wel apart from that glitch I mentioned.

DragonBall Z Budokai HD
Dragons Dogma
Need for Speed Most Wanted
Ni No Kuni
Uncharted 3
Dishonoured
Dragons Dogma Dark Arrisen + Bitter Black Isle content completed
The Last of Us
Mass Effect 1
Mass Effect 2
Mass Effect 3
WWE 13 - Attitude era mode
Hatsune Mikku Project Diva F
Diablo 3 - Normal / Nightmare
Beyond: Two Souls
Ryu ga Gotoku 5 - epic from start to finish, manages to surpass all previous Yakuza titles in every way, slightly hampered by not understanding the smaller details of the story line, but even without it this is up there with the last of us for my fave games of the year, even the Generation. Dare I even say possibly the top of my list. The whole game is just so rich and vibrant, even after about 150 hours I only managed to get 84.46 % completion, if I wasn't selling the PS3 so soon, I would have done more.

More people should play this game.

Depression Quest - PC 4/5

A free web game which tries to articulate what it's like to suffer from depression. As someone who has suffered very badly in the past I found a lot of it rang very true to my experiences (sometimes painfully close). It's multiple choice, and the way it rules out options based on your current well-being is a good way of simulating that feeling of knowing there's a way out but not being able to take that step. A smart game, and obviously a complete downer (I found very little hope in my playthrough, and I doubt there's any way to 'win') and if it can raise awareness of the illness then a very good thing indeed. http://www.depressionquest.com/

Hitman Absolution (2012)

Developer(s) IO Interactive
Publisher(s) Square Enix

Back in the PS2 days I loved the Hitman series, I loved the clever and inventive ways in which you could kill people, I loved the fact that you could play how you liked, be it all guns blazing or like if you were never there…it’s safe to say I was a fan. So I was pretty excited about playing the 5th instalment of the series, especially since it had been 6 years since it’s last release.

GRAPHICS
The game looks rather decent I thought, cut scenes were highly detailed and the in-game graphics were fairly decent. In the old Hitman games, having large amount of people on screen could sometimes be a problem and it meant it didn’t look too great and I’m not even sure you could kill anyone in a crowd. Now though, that technical issue is history and 47 (The games protagonist) goes to many places where it's dense with people, all convincingly doing their own thing. That’s one thing the Hitman series has always done well, bringing the World to life, be it a busy China Town market, a packed bar or a quiet Hotel, it always feels and looks convincing and this iteration has done a fantastic job.

My only gripe with the graphics is that it isn’t quite as realistic as I would of liked, despite being almost ultra-detailed during cut scenes, it felt a tiny bit cartoony. It was almost distracting how video-gamey it looked, plus 47’s head had a weird shape.

In all honesty the game looks fantastic, maybe not jaw dropping-ly so, but solid none-the-less.

You could kill all them...if you wanted.

SOUND
I wasn’t overly impressed with any of the sound. It wasn’t that it was bad or anything, but neither the score or voice acting was particularly amazing or memorable. In fact, I found 47’s monotone voice a bit grating if I’m honest. I don’t remember any of the music, despite playing it last night.

However all the sound of the environment was convincing and realistic, helping immerse you into the World.

GAMEPLAY
This is where the series, and the this game, really shines. A typical mission dumps you in a random, yet unique, environment and gives you a target to kill. You can go anywhere you like, but some places you are obviously not allowed to go as it would be trespassing…of course there are ways around that, such as wearing the appropriate uniform. So you search the entire map possible and start progressing to your target, sometimes it’s as easy as walking through a crowd of people, while other times you have to progress by avoiding enemy agents who are hunting 47.

Once you have found your target, you need to study them, learn their routine and then find a way to kill them. The best way is to make it look like an accident, maybe you put poison in their food, maybe you expose a high voltage wire and attach it to a metal gate you know they are going to eventually use or even just leaving the gas on in their apartment, via the oven, and setting of an explosive while you’re a block away. These types are kills are extremely satisfying and reward you with a stack load of points (which you can compare with friends to see who is the better Assassin).

Of course, you don’t HAVE to play like a super ninja, maybe you wanna go all Arnie and just shoot every person on the map? Go for it, yes the game takes points off you for even injuring anyone who isn’t the target, but if you don’t care about the score then kill all the folk you like. Many times I started a mission like I was a true silent assassin, only to screw things up and just went gun ho…or the other way round where I started all gun ho but managed to kill the target without him realizing I was in the vicinity. Last night, I did a mission where I just killed everything breathing…it was fun and the shooting mechanics work so much better than previous games.

If you’re a score hound, you may have to take a great deal of time learning everyone’s routine, learning where everything is and even then playing the level multiple times to make sure you get that perfect score. Otherwise it’s pretty brilliant and I would say is just as strong, if not stronger, than ever before. One other issue is that your target will keep repeating their routine and basically walk around in circles, it seems unnatural and makes you feel like they are just waiting for you to kill them...but I can't think of any other way to learn your targets routine, so it's a small complaint.

NARRATIVE
I wasn’t overly impressed with the story, I enjoyed some of the characters, otherwise for the most part it was pretty average…would have been better if I had seen how it ended.

VERDICT
I was actually enjoying the game, I loved the fact that I could play how I liked. I was really having fun last night blasting every mofo in sight, it works surprisingly well as a shooter. Then something catastrophic happened. As I walked through a door, I sat there watching the loading screen for about 2 minutes…something was up. It then went completely black doing nothing, I tried holding the Home button on the pad but nothing happened, it had clearly crashed. So I turned off the PS3 and switched it back on and immediately checked my game save, my worst fear had happened, the save file had become corrupt. I turned on the game in a desperate hope that it would somehow repair it…as I got to the main menu I got the message that I haven’t got a save game file and it needs to create a new one. I was on about mission 15 out of20 and it was gone, all gone. I obviously took to the net and apparently loads of people have experienced the same problem. Even more worryingly is that it’s even on the games wiki page!

Something no Playstation player wants to see

“Shortly after launch, scores of complaints came in about the game crashing, freezing and corrupting file saves on the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, rendering many of the games unplayable. On 26 November 2012, IO Interactive stated that they were working around the clock to try and fix these technical errors, but also stated that they did not know what exactly was causing the errors, so a patch may take some time. As of September 2013, the issues with the game have not yet been resolved, the problems not yet diagnosed and the patch not yet released. This may be due to Square Enix's recent financial troubles and IO Interactive's reorganization and layoffs.”

So they never bothered fixing it. How can a company release a broken product and not even bother to fix it? If I had bought this game brand new, I would be contacting trading standards, Sqaure Enix and PSN for making me pay for a product that does not work. As it is, it didn’t cost me personally, a penny, so I can’t be arsed with it all. I just deleted the game and moved on, wary of buying future releases.

A game I was really starting to enjoy, ruined by a game breaking glitch. My final score is the level in which I recommend it to others and how can I recommend a game that might not even work for everyone?

HA! That's the exact same reason I never got into the resident evil series. I was loving the shit out of resi 1 on the PS1 years ago, and it broke just like that. I would try to go through a door and it just wouldn't load the next bit. I've never played any Resident Evil game since.
