Yea you're right they could have released Drakengard 3 and marketed it like this and it would have been the fastest selling PS4 game ever.

Cost-benefit analysis. Putting big money into a game of this type.

Or, look at what happened to Devil May Cry after DMC2.

They might have won some goodwill back after DMC3, but it was forced into a niche thing and never got back to the general appeal it used to enjoy.

You can't say that the type of game does not matter. If GoW ends up alienating a lot of people you aren't going to see the same pickup for the next title

Ok, outside of Chess simulators, it does not matter. There’s a reason why this game looks a lot like Uncharted or Last of Us. Because those games sell bucketloads.

People love PlayStation and they are super effectiv at getting their message out there.

Even SotC sold bucketloads and that’s a super niche thing. This game is very broad and easy to understand. With that marketing and that Naughtydog style look this was always going to sell tonnes

The more surprising thing is how well it works when if you said “character action game, over the shoulder camera” I would of been like “Nope”
