You could take your story to the local press, they'd no doubt love a bit of controversy surrounding Wii and HMV's obvious incompetence. HMV wouldn't like it too much though.

I got my Wii at HMV too. The doofus at the counter was fucking ages scanning my receipt, he kept going back and forth to the phone. When i said my name they gave each other some freakish looks and i thought for a moment they sold the damn thing. I'd have fucking killed them if they did. That sucks man.

Hey,
First of all it's terrible what happened and I hope that your girlfriend feels better about it all. Things like this are completly crap and often very annoying specially with anything where there is a level of fan based purchasing . I'm sure this has all been made worse by the timing of the events.
I work at GAME and I know full well I would get a severe telling off if not complete dismisal if I sold a pre-order to somebody else. I cannot beleive that a whole managment team in a store would allow this level of stupidity knowing the consequences of angry customers. They certainly wouldnt try a stunt like this on a launch date it's more likely if you hadn't come for a few days and they thought you wern't coming.
It could be any number of reasons and although the company is definatly to blame in some manner it isn't clear how this has happened. Remember the real scum is the person with your console right now, they may have just looked at the pre-order list while a friend was pre-ordering for instance.
I hope you get your console and an explination if there has been some wrong doing on anyone but the other customers part. I hope also you remember to just enjoy Christmas and make your girl feel like a million quid; she sounds like she is worth it. Have a good un and I hope you get your machine.

I just can't understand how HMV could sell a pre-ordered console without a receipt. That's why it sounds so fishy, as if it is an inside job.
Really hope you get your Wii before Xmas, it is certainly a fantastic console.

I certainly hope you are going to take more action that it is possible to take, unless of course you don't want the hassle of it all and don't mind waiting. You say that when HMV gave you your depsoit back your contract with them was terminated, but haven't they already broken said contract by letting some one else take the console which you pre-ordered and got it £30 cheaper no less!

What happened here is not right. You would have thought HMV would have been fine, what with being official launch partner.
I seriously hope you will take this further because they have broken a legally binding contract and it is not fair.

HMV should give you a Wii for free for what they have done, it is certainly unforgivable.
I would think you'd be able to get a Wii fairly soon.

Sorry, I didn't mean to rub salt into the wound, I was just just trying to say that he won't be disappointed when he finally gets the Wii.
