NieR: Automata has been a surprise hit. Back in September, Square Enix announced that the action role-playing game had shifted over two million copies, so it's clear that the publisher is paying attention. As such, we wouldn't be at all shocked to see a sequel get revealed at some point over the next year or so.

Job listings have previously hinted that another NieR title is being prepped by the publisher, and now the evidence is starting to mount. In the latest issue of Japanese publication Dengeki PlayStation -- as translated by Gematsu -- producer Yosuke Saito hints that something is in the works.

"As for a game, we’re making preparations for the setting," Saito says. "I hope you will look forward to it.”

Saito is then asked whether nutty director Yoko Taro will play a part. He replies: "I would like to believe (laughs). Yoko says he will do anything as long as he receives money for it, but there is no one who doesn’t move for money as much as that man. He only wants to do what he wants to do. So I’ll try my best to explicitly say what he doesn’t want to do to guide him towards what I want to do (laughs)."

Hopefully Taro is on board for whatever this next project turns out to be, otherwise it just wouldn't be the same, would it?

It has taken far longer than I had hoped, but I'm finally ready to start this after what? 6 months? Thankfully, somehow, I have had 0 percent spoiled for me this whole time, so I'm going I. Just as blind now as I would have then.

Let's see what all the fuss is about. I have very high hopes.

I've got to the machine village and got my first annoying side quest. Apparently I know have to go all the way back to the desert.

I don't know how I feel about it so far. I loved the opening. But as soon as you touch down on earth and start running around, we'll, I don't know.

In a lot of ways Automata feels like a game out of time with its PS2-era approach to open world.

I kind of liked that but I admit that I really didn't engage with the side-content in this game at all because I didn't want to put up with that kind of busywork. I'm not sure what stuff I might have missed there. My final clock read 27 hours which was apparently shorter than most.

Is that your total time for all 3 play throughs?

Edit: My post has a bunch of stuff about the structure of the game. It's not plot spoilers but maybe some people want this stuff to be a surprise so stop reading if that's the case.

That's my total playtime for the game. They aren't 'playthroughs'. You don't get an ending for route's A or B. It's more like a mid-season finale. The ending is on route C. At which point you can reload your last save and get ending D and E. C, D and E can be got in a single sitting.

The only repetition is that 60% of route B is like route A. Route C has all the best content.

These aren't spoilers but people get thrown off by the structure of the game so I think it's fair to explain how it works up front. After all Nier 1 did involve a huge amount of repetition and people come into Automata expecting it to be like that.

Also it really is worth it to check out some of the youtube stuff for the backstory. You might not be that invested right now but the stuff with Drakengard 1 and Nier 1 is actually cool.

There is a guy on youtube called Clemps who makes these videos, but there are other ones also.

I’m not so much invested at this point as I am intrigued by how bizarre it all is. I feel like at this point there’s only been two things of note. The robots pretending to fuk each other like humans and they birth that Android, and the robot lady at the festival that wanted to be beautiful

I’m not saying I understand the meaning of these things, but I’m just kind of I tigued about how crazy those things are.

I’m looking forward to getting back in to it later. The open sections of the game are intimidating to begin with, but they’re not actually as big as they seem. I also like the fact you can get in top of buildings. And the way 2B moves. Her run and glide just feels fun to do.

I’m struggling with the combat. It’s not hard, but I’m not good at it. I’ve died twice so far, one death each at the bosses I mentioned. Both cases I was at half health and they just unleashed an attach that killed me. Hmm.

The biggest annoyance for me that I think will come in to play is the side missions. I hope it’s not like Xenoblade where you have to continuously check the same camps over and over again after every time you do something to see if there’s a new side quest there

I have no idea because again I did very few of them.

I'm an ardent believer that if side-content is making you not enjoy a game then you should just not engage with it.

Unfortunately in Automata it leads to the situation that you become underlevelled, so I had to drop down to easy mode late in my game. Original Nier was very very easy so it did not have this issue.

As far as the combat goes it isn't Bayonetta or anything. It's an action-RPG which happens to have a decent combat engine with a couple of moves. It's more about how you organise the memory chips. You don't really need to be good at the game, you just need to be strong enough.

I might pick this up again on PS4 and actually do the side-content if it gets cheap enough.

Now I'd like to take this opportunity to link the best boss fight in the Nier series. Comes from the original game

Maybe I’m incorrect but Imt me Nier has a really similar tone to FF7. Maybe it’s that it opens in a factory and it all feels a bit desolate, one character thinks they’re helping win the planet back and the other one probably doesn’t right now, but will end up caring.

I don’t know. Maybe I’m wrong. I’m sure you could also attribute it to general JRPG angst but FF7 was the first game I thought of when I started the playing this

I heard this was really good and even added to my Steam wishlist, but I just found out that it is made by Platinum games. I have hated everything that they have ever produced. Lucky escape! :o
