I did okay with the Marquis, managed to beat him first time with most folk round 18- I had Hero, Torenko and the two twins on my squad. Hero and Meena took care of healing duties, and I had Maya doing her fireball attack along with Torenko pathetically hitting away. It worked out pretty well though, the bad guy wasn't able to do much damage that my two folk couldn't heal, although using your strongest character just to patch everyone up probably isn't a tactic I'd do again...

Well done, there can't have been too much wrong with your tactics! I'm going to fight him again now. My team is a bit useless healing wise though, my biggest damage dealer is the only one who knows midheal. The rest can't heal at all... Hopefully my offensive onslaught will take him down!

Yeah i beat him. Had my Hero oomphed was hitting for 198 every turn!

I love revisiting all the places in the game, hearing about what's happened to this or that NPC since the last time you visited... :)

Dammit, got wiped out for the first time, on the boss when you retrieving a certain stolen item... it was horrible. One by one my folk all fell, and then it was just me pathetically standing there while the bad guy smacked me around until I was dead. Stupidly I was using the Kiryl guy but only to buff the team up, didn't even realise he had the fizzle spell to stop magic attacks.

Was going to reload and try again but figured I should learn my lesson, so instead I marched back in, got my tactics right and it was dead easy. I felt bad for all my little coffins lying behind me... should have listened to you about using Kiryl in the team earlier, he's really useful now. I've had to bump Rygar from my starting line up which is a shame because I like his theme tune the best.

Well ahead of me then, my hero's up to 23 I think. It wasn't Balthzar who gave me trouble it was Kirk Buzzer, which is pretty embarrassing as I'd sailed past the other bosses okay and this little punk just destroyed my elite squad. I mean he really gave me a total kicking. Now I know how the Emperor in Star Wars felt when he received news that a spotty bunch of youths had blown up his Death Star.

Is there any way to get metal slimes to stop running away from you? I've come across a bunch but only a few stick around to give me that lovely levelling up chime.

I doubt it. I've only managed to kill about 2 of the 10 or so i've met. You either have to hit them three times, which rarely happens, or hope for a critical hit. I guess you could try whack, maybe? I even ran into one liquid metal slime, god imagine the experience off that! :D

Well I've got much main guys up to 33 or over now, and I think I must be near the end... did have one annoying bit where I had no idea where I had to go, led to over half an hour of trial and error and speaking to every bloody person in the kingdom. My only problem with the game is that it'd be nice to have the town names marked on the map- many times I know what area I want to go in, but can't remember what the closest town is called... still that's not a problem anymore now I'm travelling in style...

Yeah - i was stuck for ages too, you didn't know where to go to get the airship, did you?

Anyway, HEAVY SPOILERS AHOY:

I finally beat the game. Did the final fight in one try, but he was very strong, it was really epic with the fight getting progressively harder as it went along. My levels were al l 38/39. Awesome fight.

Then i went to the Azimuth place and did the extra dungeon. The boss fight at the end of that was genius - summed up everything i love about this game. Not only was it funny, it was also rock hard. I mean, by far and away the toughest fight in the game. I beat it on my second attempt, with one character out of nine alive - talk about all or nothing!

Anyway, after that i got a special flower which allowed me to resurrect Rose, and now she wants me to take her to Psaro. Maybe i will get a special "proper" ending, or something? Looking forward to it anyway! :)

At this stage i've more or less 100%d the game, enough to my satisfaction anyway (apart from fighting Psaro again, of course). I have 55/60 mini medals, 15 undiscovered monsters...and everything else done as far as i know. Roll on Dragon Quest V! :D

It was actually before the airship, which I got okay because I'd stumbled on that town earlier. It was one of the armour pieces, got the one from the lady town okay and another one okay, but there was a third piece which I was clueless about where to go... I think somewhere along chapter five I started doing everything out of order- I arrived in Rosehill and met the girl way before I think I was meant to- so it took a while to get back to where the game was wanting me to go.

Reached the final boss, got to his final form and everyone got hilariously wiped out one by one... realised I'd forgotten to blow the damn bugle before hand and hadn't used the magic healing stone or whatever...- just as well it's not down to me to save the world, because we'd all be screwed.

Really enjoyed this though, the only RPGs I've enjoyed before have been Earthbound and Brave Story, but this has changed my mind about the genre, so looking at some of the other DS ones with interest- got The World Ends With You waiting for a shot, and Contact (although I hear that's a bit dodgy)- any recommendations? Ideally with turn based battle.

To be honest DQIV and TWEWY are the only rpgs i have on DS! Are you asking for DS rpg recommendations or rpg recommendations on any console? If you liked this one then you'll love DQ VIII on the PS2. I know i go on and on about it but it really is that good! Anyway i'm sort of jealous that you have TWEWY to look forward to - it can seem a bit overwhelming at the beginning, but give it some time and before long you'll find your own groove. Really really original game, there's nothing like it out there. It becomes really impossible to put down. :)

Generally I've found RPGs more fun to play on a handheld but I'll definitely check out DQ VIII. Got a long plane ride later so planning on getting stuck into TWEWY :)

Finished this earlier this afternoon (6 hours ahead here)- so here's the final tally-

Time Taken : 026 : 23
Battles : 1042
Monsters Defeated : 2850
Victories : 1017
Times Wiped Out : 1
Times Fled : 23 ( )
Max Damage in One Hit : 338
Clear Level : 36
"Caretaker Corps"

Going to do the bonus chapter later on, luckily thanks to your post I know where to go because I was wondering around lost again... One thing I didn't understand about the end of the game- It was the monsters who kidnapped and killed Rose, pretending to be humans in order to draw the hero out of hiding... but didn't Psaro love Rose... so why did he give them the okay to kidnap and kill her? Or have I made that all up in my head... !

Whitey white: I don't think he gave that order. I thought when they killed Rose he was really angry and gave out to them...weird!

Anyway, yeah i fled about that number of times too. You gotta do what you gotta do! :D

Hey speaking of handheld rpgs i started into FFVI Advance last night and it really has captivated me. I played it before about 6 years but that was a long time ago. Iim playing it with my ipod headphones which has made the world of difference. Already in the first hour or so the amount of brilliant music in it is amazing - it really has one of the greatest rpg soundtracks ever! If you liked DQIV then the FF Advance games really are ideal handheld gaming aswell. VI is probably the best, but it's the best of a great bunch! Or you could get the 3d remake of IV. At any rate, i think you should enjoy them.

Cheers, might do that, the only FF game I've really put time into is Crisis Core which I didn't really get on with, but I hear it's not really representative of the series. Might take a shot at the remake of IV after I've tried TWEWY. I need more hours in the day... :(
